Biochemistry Vacancies

CSIR Biosciences unit has a vacant position for a Doctoral Studentship: Biochemistry (NRF PDP-funded) in the Protein Technologies Platform based in Pretoria. The platform plays a central role in the unit’s renewed focus of translating bio-based products and technologies from a proof of concept to the market in support of the emerging bioeconomy.

Purpose of the studentship:

The doctoral studentship will provide the incumbent with an opportunity to work closely with a vibrant team of scientists with experience in diverse research and product development disciplines. The focus of the work will be to use structural bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques to produce and engineer improved formulation stability into selected proteins that have commercialisation potential. Their structure and function will then be studied using biophysics, biochemistry and structural biology techniques. The ultimate aim will be to improve the commercialisation potential of these proteins and to generate new knowledge.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A Master’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or biotechnology.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of molecular biology, biochemistry, bioprocessing, bioinformatics and/or biophysical techniques.

Special competencies and skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A good work ethic.
  • Sound technical knowledge.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment.
  • A desire to work in a product oriented environment.

Terms of the studentship:

  • The incumbent will enter into a studentship agreement with CSIR Biosciences unit for a period of one year, renewable for a period of up to three years. Continuation of the agreement is subject to the continuation of funding and performance reports submitted annually.
  • The incumbent will be required to register with a leading South African university.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
