Purpose of the Job

Planning / Engineering and facilitation of the implementation and commissioning of the Cell C Transport & Access Transmission Network.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1.Transmission Network Design/Engineering
•Planning / Engineering of the Cell C Transmission Network, Microwave as well as Fiber Optic, covering (but not limited to) technologies such as SDH, DWDM, IP/MPLS and other optic fiber line systems.
•Plan, configure and commission the transport network infrastructure according to agreed network configuration guidelines.
•Ensure transport network reliability with correct infrastructure commissioning practices.
•Ensure transmission access strategy is implemented correctly.
•Ensure Access network strategy is implemented correctly.
•Identify and communicate deficiencies on transport network architecture.
•Plan and co-ordinate Transmission projects.
•Handover of Transport Network to Manage Services / Operations
•Maintain network strategy on Access layers.
•Ensure network rollout performance targets are met.
2.Project Implementation and Management
•Keep a track on the customer schedule and flag timelines for specific activities
•Identify problem areas and propose possible solutions.
•Co-ordinate activities between Vendors and Cell C regions to rectify problem areas.
•Drive to meet the time lines set for the project.
•Liaise and co-ordinate with all equipment suppliers
•Liaise with various Business Units for business requirements for design/forecasting/strategy.
3.Report Generation.
•Generate reports on transmission network architecture.
•Ensure all activities are accurately and timeously recorded.
•Ensure all recording of performance data are accurately done.
•Compile weekly and monthly reports on all activities as well as monthly reports detailing the utilisation and incurring costs for transmission infrastructure including links.
4.Perform any other related duties as requested by Management.

Skills & Experience

•5 – 6 years as a Transmission engineer in a carrier /Telco environment/ Mobile environment
•Thorough understanding of interface specifications and protocols used in the Telecommunication/Carrier environment (DWDM, SDH, PDH, ATM, ISDN, GSM, WCDMA, SS7, VoIP, IP/MPLS, Ethernet microwave).
•Thorough understanding of transmission networks, transmission equipment, different types of transmissions and their limitations
•Through understanding of self provisioning methods in networks
•Basic fault finding on transmission networks (must have the ability to use test equipment)
•Good knowledge of Mobile switching and Data networks.
•Good knowledge of regulatory procedures applicable to transmission.
•Good knowledge of IP/MPLS networks and TCP/IP.
•Experience in installation and maintenance of transmission network elements (including but not limited to; wiring of DDF’s, termination of fibre optic lines & installation of microwave systems)

Educational Requirements
•Degree/Diploma in Engineering / Computer Science / Telecommunications with the relevant telecoms experience. Higher qualification is an advantage.
