Position Overview:
The chemist is responsible for providing analytical support to laboratory team. The chemist will be able to support routine, yet complex environmental analysis on raw ingredients, intermediates, beverage parts, final products, auxiliary materials, and water.

 

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform environmental analysis using Liquid Chromatography (LC) with UV/Vis, PDA, RI, Fluorescence, MS/MS Triple Quad, and MS-TOF detection or Ion Chromatography.

Perform other physical and analytical testing using instrumentation such as robotics, auto-titrator, density meter, refractometer, spectrophotometer, carbonation tester, and torque meter as required.

Participate in the laboratory quality system activities such as internal audits, writing standard operating procedures, and documentation review

Record data from analyses or experiments in a computer (LIMS), log book, or laboratory notebook

Prepare samples for analysis

Apply statistics to describe and control processes

Evaluate the suitability of test results and report test results

Support internal auditing

Work in teams

Manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Train others

Solve problems

Comply with all Quality and Environment, Health and Safety requirements according to the relevant, Standard operating procedures, work instructions and forms.

 

FINANCIAL/ JOB SCOPE

Provides analytical support to divisions and bottlers within Africa region or potential external customers.

 

ORGANIZATION IMPACT/ INFLUENCE

The data provided to the Coca-Cola system by the GQAS labs impact quality improvement decisions in producing facilities and distribution centers, thus impacting capital improvement budgets. The data are frequently used as performance indicators and can impact the compensation of Division and bottler QA personnel.

Internally, may need to interact with Global Quality or Division quality associates to discuss relevant matters or to provide or receive training.

Externally, may need to interact with suppliers to provide feedback and with bottler quality associates to provide consultation and training. Other contacts include vendors of instruments and supplies to obtain materials, equipment, training and services.
RELATED JOB REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS

At least 5 years of analytical working experience in a laboratory and at least 2 years on advanced analytical techniques. Basic knowledge of Liquid Chromatography (LC/IC)

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline preferred

 

ANALYSIS

The following are examples of problem solving performed by chemists, each requires developing new approaches:

Identifying test data errors and discrepancies sources and taking appropriate action

Identifying source of equipment malfunctions and taking appropriate action

Addressing immediate resource allocation inadequacies by taking on additional responsibilities

Identifying potential new technologies and helping assess their suitability

Scheduling cross-training activities to ensure effectiveness and timeliness

Performing root cause analysis to correct a quality issue

 

JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING

Provide input (recommendations) on instrument purchases

Have the primary responsibility (authority) for

Scheduling assigned analyses and related activities

Auditing data and assuring its validity

Reporting data

Maintaining related supply inventories

Ensuring personal and environmental safety
WORKING CONDITIONS

Laboratory environment. Use of gases under safe conditions. Use of chemicals and standards under good laboratory practices.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

No travel is expected in this position.
