Clicks was conceived as a drugstore in 1968 by entrepreneurial retailer, Jack Goldin, however legislation at the time prevented corporate ownership of pharmacies in South Africa. Legislation changed in 2003 to allow corporate pharmacy ownership and the first Clicks pharmacy opened in March 2004

 

Clicks initiated, which is now, one of the largest loyalty programmes in South Africa with over 3.5 million active ClubCard members.

Musica, the largest retailer of music and related entertainment merchandise in South Africa, was acquired in 1992. Musica has expanded beyond its traditional core music business to a broader range of entertainment products in line with changing market and consumer trends.

The Body Shop, a high-profile global brand which markets naturally-inspired beauty products, is managed under a franchise arrangement with The Body Shop International since 2001, and the Group has extended this contract until 2020.

United Pharmaceutical Distributors (UPD),acquired in 2003, is South Africa’s only full-line pharmaceutical wholesaler which provides the distribution capability for the Group’s integrated channel to the healthcare market.

Owing to the extensive opportunities to expand the current store base and pharmacy network, South Africa remains the Groups primary focus, with a small presence in the neighbouring African countries of Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland.
