ESTATE MANAGER 2 POSTS REF NO: 212/2015
Directorate: Forestry Management (Eastern Cape)
SALARY : R289 761 per annum
CENTRE : Kei Area and East Griqualand

REQUIREMENTS : A National Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Forestry and relevant experience in the
Forestry environment at supervisory level. Knowledge of the policy and legislative
framework, sectoral legislation and regulatory framework of Forestry and labour in
South Africa. Knowledge of best management practices and environmental
management system. Computer literacy in MS office software. The ability to
document or record information as well as organise, plan and prioritise work. A
valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel.

DUTIES : Promote and manage all aspects of industrial plantations (pine and gum
plantations) and implement environmental management practices and labour
legislation as well as finance and best management practices for plantations in
order to contribute towards an informed management decision. Supervise the
activities of foresters and other forestry workers. Establish short- and long-term
plans for the management of plantation and forest resources. Monitor contract
compliances as well as the results of forestry activities to ensure adherence to
Government regulations. Compile monthly reports and quarterly progress reports.
Contribute to the strategic plans of the Directorate: Forestry Management in
terms of drawing an annual plan of operations (APO), business plans and work
plans for replanting and growing trees, monitoring trees for healthy growth and determining the best time for harvesting. Develop forest management plans,
forestry fire suppression strategies and fire management to prevent and combat
veld and forest fires. Assist with the implementation, enforcement and promotion
of the National Forest Act, 1998 (Act 84 of 1998) (NFA) and National Veld and
Forest Fire Act (NVFFA). Develop and implement plans, update APOs and
recommended management decisions. Protect plantations for economics and
conservation purposes. Monitor and report on the use of State resources and
ensure financial control. Implement standards and operational practices. Manage
forested lands for economics, recreational and conservation purpose. Assist
farmers, communities and other forest owners to manage their land. Deal with all
technical and other enquiries from stakeholders. Coordinate awareness
campaigns (e.g Fire and Participatory Forest Management). Provide advice and
recommendations as a consultant on forestry issues to private woodlot owners,
firefighters, Government agencies and/or companies. Mentor and evaluate all
staff members. Arrange appropriate courses or training for staff. Conclude work
plans with all employees and complete assessment reports. Conduct regular
reviews and provide recognition for performance. Participate in transformation
activities and workshops. Provide input to transformation policies when required.
