Take full responsibility for allocated design projects and provide a Professional Design service. This might include, new developments, designs, reverse Engineering special projects, research and Investigations related to large Steam, Gas and Hydro Turbines, Generators and related plant.

Key Performance Areas (KPA’s)

Ability

Provide a Reverse Engineering Service

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Provide a Professional Reverse Engineering and Reverse Engineering Review service in line with approved and accepted processes, standards, company policies and procedures related to Reverse Engineering Reverse Engineer from 1stprinciples, FEA, material analysis in line with an approved and accepted process.
  • Reverse Engineer for manufacturing of consumable spares (key focus; Turbine and Generator Plant consumable type spares, eg. Bearings, Glands, H2 Seals, etc.)
  • Inspect and review performances of Reverse Engineered Designs.
  • Reverse Engineer Design verification services, including Fracture Mechanics, failure predictions, FEA for life prediction, Welding Modeling and computational Fluid Dynamics.
  • Ensure the Division is kept abreast of the latest Reverse Engineering trends, developments and technology available on Turbo Generators plant and related Engineering Software.
  • Compile design reports, weekly reports, monthly reports, and audit reports.

New Design and Modifications on Turbine and Plant Equipment

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Provide a Professional Engineering service on modifications and new designs in line with approved and accepted processes, standards, company policies and procedures related to modifications and new designs.
  • Evaluate modification and new designs to turbine and associated plant.
  • Research and develop new and special tooling and Technical Software.
  • Modifications and New Designs from 1stprinciples, FEA, material analysis in line with an approved and accepted process.
  • New Designs and Modifications done taking into account manufacturing processes.
  • Inspect and review performance of designs.
  • Design and design verification services.
  • Design according to relevant standards.
  • Compile design reports, weekly reports, monthly reports and audit report.

Technical Investigations and Technology Improvements

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Investigate rework, failure investigations, technical problems and incidents associated with Turbo Gen Services as may be requested.
  • Recommendations and findings shall be properly documented and approved.  An action plan will be drawn up with responsibilities, dates and backed up with SDR’s as may be required.
  • Source, maintain and operate specialized equipment related to Engineering and outage activities.  This might include using measurement equipment and recordings as well as the 3D scanner.
  • Research and Investigate Technology and method improvements.
  • Compile investigation reports, 3D scan data reports monthly reports and Audit reports.

Assist in the Development and Enhancement of Design Skills

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Enhance own technical knowledge on design and development to ensure high level of engineering confidence.
  • Transfer of technical know-how, information, experience and skills to the trainee in order for the trainee to successfully complete his / her training program.
  • Guide Trainee Engineers in their development by advising and supporting them with regard to the assignments and interventions in their training programs.
  • Meet at least once very 2ndmonth with the Trainee Engineers to review and document the personal performance and progress against that required by the Training program, and identified development action plans.  Compile corrective action plans to improve personal performance.
  • Give input to enhance training and development programs.

Comply with Safety Health Environment and Quality Requirements

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and ’s SHE System requirements.
  • Comply with the Plant Safety Regulations.
  • Stop unsafe work activities and report to the Project / Site Manager for rectification.
  • Comply with policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Control and maintenance of ISO Quality System in accordance with the Business Management System in relation to this job function

Customer and Interdepartmental Relationships

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Liaise closely with the customer turbine engineering representative and OEM representative in all areas of the project relative to areas of responsibility.
  • Liaise with clients and site staff regarding improvement of plant availability, reliability and performance.
  • Foster and maintain sound relationships with members of the Engineering, Project Services, Steam Maintenance and Works Service Departments to ensure Engineering and Business objectives are achieved.
  • Demonstrate passion and willingness to learn in dealing with Superiors and all ’s entities, which could include individual direct customer communication.

Performance and Development

Being able to demonstrate ability, proficiency, knowledge and understanding to:

  • Meet monthly with Seniors and reviews progress against training program.
  • Compile and implement corrective action plans to improve performance and achieve key targets.
  • Meets every 6 months with Seniors and via the PDR system review personal performance and compiles corrective action plans to improve personal performance.
  • Enhance technical knowledge on the plant and equipment to ensure high level of engineering confidence.
  • Encourage self to feature in seminars, papers and conferences.
  • Encourage self to become respected specialists in the Industry field.
Candidate Requirements

Minimum Qualification and Experience Required

  • BSc / BEng (Mechanical, Engineering)

 

  • Minimum Three (3) years’ experience specifically related to Mechanical Design using modern FEA modeling.
  • Advanced computer skills – MS Office, MS Projects, CAD and FEA Software (SolidWorks, Nastran, Patran, Marc or similar)
  • Thermodynamic and fluid dynamic modeling, 3D scanning and knowledge of High Temperature steels.
  • Experience of Quality Management systems and relevant ISO standards.
  • Experience of the OHSA, Construction Regulations and Environmental Regulations.
