INSPECTOR OF MINES: MINE HEALTH AND SAFETY 2 POSTS REF NO:
DMR/14/0047
SALARY : R495 603 per annum (all inclusive package), Level 11
CENTRE : Northern Cape Region (Kimberley)

 

REQUIREMENTS : Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Metalliferous or Coal) with
appropriate experience in the mining industry and a valid driver’s licence PLUS
the following key competencies:Knowledge of:Mine Health and Safety
ActExtensive knowledge and experience of both Underground and surface
mining.Basic Knowledge of Labour Relations and ResourcesUnderstanding
of DMR policies aimed at optimal utilisation of mineral resourceSkills:High –
level management.Risk assessment techniquesConflict resolution and
Negotiation.Planning and organisingBudget ControlProblem
solvingComputer literacy Communication :Ability to communicate verbally
and in writing in such a way that the image and professionalism of the department
is enhanced. Creativity:Ability to analyse workload and work related
problems and to implement a strategy to ensure a continuous improvement.

 

DUTIES : The appointee’s primary responsibility will be to enforce adherence to the Mine
Health and Safety Act, 1996 (Act No 29 of 1996). In addition she/he
will:Conduct inspections, audits, investigation and inquiries into accidents and
Incidents.Give support and assistance in promotion of health and safety in the
mining industry.Make inputs on regional action plan to develop strategies
required to monitor legal compliance by mines.Play a role in the formulation of
health and safety legislation, guidelines and various regulatory
mechanisms.Participate in tripartite structures and develop strategies towards
the promotion Tripartism within the mining industry.Manage Information
Systems Support and develop a transformation process within the regional
office.

NOTE : These appointments will be subject to a pre-medical examination of fitness. It will
be required of the person to travel and sleep over time to time. Candidates
without Mine Manager Certificate of Competency but with Mine Overseers
Certificate or National Diploma/ B-Tech degree in Mining Engineering will be
appointed on a four year contract at salary level 10 (R314, 709).
