Regional Switch Engineers are required to have their own mode of transport, preferably a vehicle. This is important because they are required to be on call and attend to night switch activities for various reasons. They are on call for a week on a rotational basis, depending on the number of Engineers in that specific Switch and number of Switches under their care.

During this period, the Switch Engineers are responsible for:

1.On site control of all switch activities and building facilities during the day and night in all the Switch Centres (monitoring of contractors).

2.Scheduled and Unscheduled Overtime: Most switch expansions and testing on life equipment happen at night, and Regional Switch Engineers are required to be present on both occasions, which means they have to use their own vehicles to go to work normally during the day and at night for night activities.

3.Callouts: Regional Switch Engineers on call are required to attend to any faults escalated from the SMC to maintain the network integrity. These faults range from AXE Hardware to transmission faults, and have to be localised on site and resolved as soon as possible.

Regional Switch Engineers are in titled to a travel allowance to be able to undertake their tasks and responsibilities.
