The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of
Water and Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board of Directors. The company
became a public entity on 15 July 2001 in terms of the South African Weather Service Act (No.
8 of 2001). It is an authoritative voice for weather and climate forecasting in South Africa and
as a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) it complies with international
meteorological standards. As an Aviation Meteorological Authority, SAWS is designated by
the state to provide weather services to the aviation industry, marine and a range of other
identified clients and to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The

Senior Manager: Occupational Health and Safety
Salary: (Total Package Negotiable)

Five Year Fixed Term Contract
Centre: Pretoria

Reporting to the Strategic Advisor: Human Capital Management, the successful candidate will
undertake the following tasks:

 

Key Performance Areas:
 Set up the OHS and competency within SAWS.
 Implement full scope of the OHS policy and the Act.
 Conduct training organisation wide on health and safety matters pertinent to the
business of SAWS.
 Understanding of COID and finalising COID claims.
 Ensure that all SAWS facilities comply with required OHSA.
 Manage all risks related to OHSA.
 Development of a SAWS evacuation plans for facilities and all associated signage.
 Alignment of the OHS policy of SAWS to the Disaster Recovery Plan and its Business
Continuity strategy.
 Participate in all activities related to the implementation and/or maintenance of the
SAWS TQM system

Requirements:
 An appropriate Bachelor’s degree in relevant field e.g. Environmental Health
(specialised in OHS), coupled with professional registration with HPCSA or reputable
equivalent e.g. SAMTRAC
 Operational experience in Occupational Health and Safety issues.
 At least 5 years’ experience at management level.

 

 Reporting and presentation skills
 Training skills on OHS marshals for the organisation.
 Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, OHSAS 18000, BCEA and the Labour
Relations Act. COIDA
 An understanding of Rules and regulations of the Compensation.
 An understanding of Human Resource processes and procedures.
