South African Biodiversity Informatics Research Strategy
12 month position to start 2014 with the possibility of renewal for a further 12 months

SANBI has been mandated to “collect, generate, process, coordinate and disseminate information about biodiversity and the sustainable use of indigenous biological resources, and establish and maintain databases…” SANBI and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have formalised a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of biodiversity
information management skills.
A post-doctoral position based at the University of the Western Cape is available in the development of a South African or southern African Biodiversity Informatics Research Strategy, incorporating guidelines for an undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum and
research questions. The person will play a catalytic role in the establishment of a Biodiversity Informatics post-graduate hub in the Biodiversity and Conservation Biology Department at UWC.

This is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral candidate to work in a multidisciplinary environment and bring together skills and content areas from disciplines such as Education, Information Technology, Biodiversity, Spatial Ecology, Conservation Planning, Information Management, Geographic Sciences and Computer Systems amongst other areas, to help define a curriculum for this new field of research. Experience in research development and/or education capacity building sectors will be an advantage.

 

Requirements:

A PhD (awarded in the last 5 years) in a relevant discipline. Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, keen to work as part of a team and interested in doing excellent research that can make a difference and contributes towards building a centre of excellence in biodiversity information management. Candidates must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence.

Value: R315 000 p.a. pro rata (living expenses and registration).
