Unisa is Africa’s leading distance learning institution nurturing inspiring leaders of tomorrow. UNISA is a reputable, comprehensive, flexible and accessible open distance learning institution that is motivating a future generation. We offer internationally accredited qualifications and have world-class resources.

The University of the Cape of Good Hope is established in Cape Town in 1873 and receives a royal charter in 1877.

Following the adoption of a new vision in 2005, the institution visits other open universities, launches an integrated learning management platform and launches its open distance learning (ODL) initiatives with the establishment of the UNESCO Chair in ODL.

In 2007, Further initiatives relating to ODL follow and major efforts go into integrating and optimising a range of technologies and stakeholders to advance Unisa’s ODL character. Today, Unisa is a mega-comprehensive ODL institution with more than 350 000 students.

Our vision “towards the African university in the service of humanity” drives us to find answers to Africa’s educational and developmental problems. By forming partnerships in Africa and throughout the world, we are able to help the people of Africa achieve their dreams.

From the establishment of the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1873 and the subsequent creation of Unisa in 1918, to our current student and staff contingent of over 360 000, Unisa has a history that is both unique and fascinating.

The three core business areas of Unisa are teaching, research and community engagement. Our world-class research is spearheaded by the Research and Innovation portfolio and community engagement by our Community Engagement and Outreach Policy.

We also place great importance on the celebration and promotion of our African arts and culture through various endeavours, including the Archaeology and Anthropology Museum, Music Directorate and Little Theatre.
