The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs. The company became a public entity on 15 July 2001 in terms of the South African Weather Service Act (No. 8 of 2001). It is an authoritative voice for weather and climate forecasting in South Africa and as a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) it complies with international meteorological standards.

As an Aviation Meteorological Authority, SAWS is designated by the state to provide weather services to the aviation industry, marine and a range of other identified clients and to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The organisation reserves the right not to fill this position. Scientist Climate Data: Climate Service Division
Salary: R184 919 (Total package R252 280) per annum

Centre: Pretoria
The Scientist will deliver on the following key goals and strategic objectives of the Climate
Data Unit as per the SAWS Strategic and Business Plan:
Key Performance Areas:
Participate in climate research tasks of Climate Service.
Provide a consulting service on an ad hoc basis to meet client’s requirements.
Be responsible for doing the quality control of data used for products and services provided to clients.
Conduct research projects and generate climate publications and co- author peer reviewed journal articles.
Advise clients (internal and external) with advanced interpretation/information related to climate data.
Participate in external collaboration projects with institutions in line with the strategic objectives of SAWS.
Develop and/ or compile new products and establish new methodologies and processes that will improve the service delivery to clients.
Contribute to the improvement of climatological data by participating in any software developments and implementation thereof, thus enhancing quality of climate data research.
Assist with the implementation and compliance to the requirements of the SAWS
Quality Management System
Requirements:
An appropriate 4- year or high tertiary qualification in Meteorology/Atmospheric Sciences
A minimum of 2 years of scientific experience related to atmospheric science

Knowledge and skills in formulating and writing of reports and scientific papers
Ability to read, analyse and interpret climate data and information
Knowledge of statistics, GIS (preferably ArcGIS 10), database structures and basic report-writing software (Crystal Reports, Access or other) will be an added advantage
