Accountability International (AI) is an African-led civil society organisation that works to improve accountability to the most marginalised. From our head office in South Africa, we conduct research and advocacy that allows us to do our work as a watchdog and hold various leaders accountable.

AI was established in 2005 with the mission to follow up on commitments to the AIDS epidemic that were made by governments. Our work has since expanded to sexual and reproductive health and rights, malaria, tuberculosis, and non-communicable diseases, as well as underlying causes such as inequality and discrimination. We work on holding all leaders accountable, such as business, civil society, funding partners and bi and multi-lateral development organizations. AI is non-partisan and non-confessional.

Today, we are around 7 employees located in offices in South Africa, Brussels, Geneva, Nairobi and Stockholm. The Swedish Secretariat works mainly “remotely” on financial and operational issues, whilst the South Africa office leads on mission strategy, research and advocacy. Brussels provides research development and resourcing.

Job Title: Programme Manager
Location: South Africa

Accountability International (AI) is seeking to appoint a Programme Manager on PhD level (or equivalent), with governance, marginalised communities and research and advocacy competency. The person will be primarily responsible for implementing a new governance project that begins in mid-2020. Principal tasks include programme management, research (qualitative and quantitative), advocacy, and proposal writing as required, under the management of the AI Executive Director.

 

Position Specification the role:

The Programme Manager will be:

• Leading the new AI governance programme
• Managing research projects and advocacy on governance and accountability for marginalized communities
• Leading qualitative and quantitative research
• Engaging with community, national, regional, and global partners
• Publicly representing AI on various platforms – a proficient public speaker
• Experienced in writing, and developing strategic arguments
• Develop project plans for AI research projects and programmes
• Develop project plans for AI consultancy work
• Sharing findings with partners (including funding partners and other donors).
• Managing a team of project leaders, researchers and support staff
• Supporting in other on-going AI research and other work, under the leadership of the Executive Director

All these tasks and activities are expected to be done in a timely, consistent and high-quality manner with professionalism, integrity, honesty and excellence and in collaboration with the other researchers and staff.

Background and Experience

Candidates for the role will require:

• Minimum 10-year job experience in Programme managing work
• Deep insight into Governance issues, including related/affiliated research and advocacy
• Strong budgetary/financial skills
• Experience in working with Project Management systems with a remote team
• Experience from work in marginalised populations (more especially sexual and gender minorities), human rights, health, social justice, governance, sexual reproductive health and rights and wellbeing is vital, as well as extensive understanding of developmental commitments and frameworks;
• Experience in working in partnership with civil society actors and advocates;
• Experience working with Pan-African and Global human rights and development mechanisms and bodies
• Experience from working in an international organization or at Pan-African level is an asset.
• Experience with diversity, inclusion and transformation initiatives
• Strong advocacy and public speaking ability
• Resident in Sub-Saharan Africa

Skills and Competencies

Candidates should possess:

• PhD level education or equivalent
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English – other languages an asset;
• A manifest commitment to the human rights part of the AI agenda;
• Research literacy – must understand the core work of AI;
• Proficiency in working with sexually and gender diverse environments/teams;
• Self-motivated, able to work in teams or alone, consultative and both detail and goal oriented.
• Willingness to perform simpler office jobs, like copying and putting reports together;
• Optimism and openness to new ideas and willingness to occasionally travel.
• Propensity for creativity and innovation

With its three offices (and staff in Geneva and Nairobi as well), AI works mainly remotely, so location of this position can be discussed.
