Africa Check is a non-profit organisation set up in 2012 to promote accuracy in public debate and the media in Africa. The goal of Africa Check’s work is to raise the quality of information available to society across the continent. Since 2012 they have fact-checked hundreds of claims on topics from crime and race in South Africa to population numbers in Nigeria and fake health cures in countries around Africa.

Job Title: Fundraiser for Individual Donations
Job Location: Johannesburg

To be responsible for the development and execution of a comprehensive individual donor programme to increase the organisation’s individual donations and support. The role will manage all aspects of the donation process, including the strategy for donor/prospect acquisition through broad-based appeals that generate significant revenue. He/she will also provide support to the Fundraising Manager in developing and maintaining Africa Check’s institutional and corporate donor programmes.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Developing and implementing of the organisation’s individual donor strategy with long and short-term donation goals, including for donations from general supporters and a high-net worth individual donor plan, including donors outside South Africa
  • Setting realistic fundraising targets to fixed deadlines, agreed in consultation with key staff, and achieving them
  • Developing appropriate materials (brochures, promotional materials, appeals and online content) to support every aspect of the individual donations plan
  • Managing all correspondence and reporting to prospects and donors, in liaison with the Impact Manager
  • Identifying, cultivating and soliciting individuals for general operating support, event sponsorship, volunteer programmes, and/or publicity, in liaison with the Community Manager

The Fundraiser for Individual Donations must be able to demonstrate:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience with donor identification, project-management, relationship-building, and fundraising experience, particularly individual donors with non-profit organisations
  • Experience running successful campaigns, cultivating and closing individual donations and developing individual donor strategies in South Africa
  • Experience of also developing funding from donors outside South Africa would be an advantage
  • Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of internal and external constituents
  • Outstanding written and verbal skills
  • Ability to analyse issues, identify priorities, manage projects and make decisions expeditiously
  • Understanding of moves management and effective fundraising pipeline development
  • Experience with research tools and developing donor research profiles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small close-knit team
  • Experience with nonprofit fundraising software would be an advantage
