African School for Excellence (ASE) is a nonprofit organisation developing a unique concept: a self-sustaining network of elite independent secondary schools that anyone can afford with innovative classroom model which uses technology and peer teaching to leverage a few skilled teachers in an environment of high expectations and rapid feedback. ASE allows disadvantaged South African youth to become world-class scholars and leaders who will transform their communities.

Job Title: Primary School Leader
Job Location: Port Elizabeth

The purpose of the position is to help launch a primary school that can provide world-class education at an affordable cost, using an adaptation of the existing ASE model. In the first year, the school will enroll approximately 120 young scholars in Grades R to 4. In October, the School Leader will begin meeting parents and scholars, interviewing staff, and preparing for the new school year. The school year will begin in January, 2019.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day functioning of the school, working with teachers, staff, and parents to assure a consistent, high-functioning learning environment
  • Manage the School’s discretionary budget
  • Work directly with ASE founders to adapt and develop the school’s academic and operating model as required
  • Lead day-to-day staff development, including developing a Deputy Head into a potential School Leader role (either at this school or at a new school)

Requirements:

  • Experience leading constructivist learning activities (e.g. project-based, play-based, investigative learning etc.) in an early-primary context
  • Experience in a leadership role in an educative environment (note that experience as a Principal of a school is not required)
  • Experience working to develop other adults
  • An innovative and creative outlook, comfort with experimentation, comfort pushing against the status-quo
  • Comfort with the ambiguity inherent in a start-up environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
