REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must be in possession of an appropriate recognised three-year
National diploma or Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree in Agriculture or Horticulture with
Agronomy, Botany, Entomology, Crop Production, Plant Genetics, Plant
Production, Plant Protection, Plant Pathology and/or Microbiology as a major
subject(s) (you are required to furnish a credit certificate and/or statement of
results). Appropriate knowledge of and relevant technical experience in the
Agricultural Pests Act, 1983 (Act 36 of 1983), the Plant Improvement Act, 1976
(Act 53 of 1976) and other related legislation as well as the provisions of the
World Trade Organisation Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and
Phytosanitary Measures (WTO-SPS), the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), the
Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) including agricultural law enforcement,
the regulatory environment or relevant industries. Knowledge of and experience
in generic administration processes and procedures. Good communication
(verbal and written), problem solving, interpersonal relations, conflict handling,
planning and organising skills. Ability to work well independently as well as within
a team environment. Applicants must be conversant in one (1) of the Official
Languages in which the relevant legislation is written. Capability and willingness
to conduct inspections, inter alia; in rail trucks, on trucks, on ships, in containers,
cold storages, etc. Basic computer skills in MS Office software. A valid driver’s
licence (minimum Code B) and the ability to drive as well as the willingness to
travel away from home/office at short notice, work irregular hours (shifts) and
work overtime.

DUTIES : The incumbent will be responsible to enforce, mainly, the Agricultural Pests Act,
1983 and the Plant Improvement Act, 1976, related legislation and international
agreements to ensure that the sanitary and phytosanitary status of plants and
plant products comply with the relevant minimum requirements. This includes the
independent planning and conducting of inspections as well as the auditing of
assignees respectively. Inspections include sampling, testing, surveys,
investigations, detections and audits as well as administrative tasks relating to
these functions. Occasionally conduct inspections away from his/her station as
well as overnight away from his/her station when necessary. Render service at
short notice and after hours or away from his/her station when necessary.
