REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must be in possession of a recognised three-year National diploma or
Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Food Technology/Science
and/or Environmental Health with Biotechnolo

gy, Biochemistry, Agronomy, Botany, Crop/Plant Production/Protection, Food Chemistry/Technology and/or
Microbiology as a major subject(s) (you are required to furnish a credit statement
and/or statement of results).

Relevant technical knowledge of and experience in agricultural law enforcement, the regulatory environment, quality assurance and
control, food safety, agriculture, liquor or processed products and the relevant
food industry. Knowledge of relevant legislation, international standards and
agreements, e.g. the World Trade Organisation Agreement on the Application of
Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (WTO-SPS), the Technical Barrier to
Trade (TBT) and CODEX Allimentarius will serve as an advantage.

Good communication (verbal and written), problem solving, interpersonal relations,
conflict handling, planning and organising skills. Ability to work well
independently as well as within a team environment. Applicants must be
conversant in one of the official languages in which the relevant legislation is
written.

Capability and willingness to conduct inspections, inter alia, in rail trucks,
on trucks, on ships, in containers, cold storages, etc. Computer skills in MS
Office software. A valid driver’s licence (minimum Code B) and the ability to
drive. Applicants must be prepared to travel away from home/office at short
notice, work irregular hours (shifts) and work overtime.

 

DUTIES : The incumbent will be responsible to enforce the Agricultural Product Standards
Act, 1990 (Act 119 of 1990) and the Liquor Products Act, 1989 (Act 60 of 1989)
as well as other related legislation and international agreements to ensure that
the quality and sanitary status of agricultural and liquor products comply with the
relevant minimum requirements.

This includes the independent planning and
conducting of inspections and the auditing of assignees respectively. Inspections
include sampling, testing and evaluating labels of agricultural products and
marking requirements, investigations and detection as well as administrative
tasks relating to these functions.

Where applicable, the sale/movement of
products will have to be prohibited and a due legal process will have to be
followed. Conduct inspections away from his/her station/home as well as
overnight away when necessary (occasionally). Render service at short notice
and after hours at or away from his/her station when necessary.
