ABOUT THE ROLE:

This role is based at the Amnesty International East and Southern Africa Regional Offices in Johannesburg. This is an exciting role where you’ll have a huge opportunity to make a difference. The role requires use of your practical skills in the development of multimedia content in support of various campaigns and public engagement efforts of the regional office and therefore offers plenty of scope to let your creativity and exceptional digital communication skills soar. It supports the delivery of compelling messages and stories to the right audiences through the right channels. You will maintain the regional office’s social media channels and assist in the development of content that will help achieve challenging campaign and communication goals. You will lead the development and implementation of a regional communications strategy for Amnesty International in Southern Africa.

ABOUT YOU:

An experienced communications professional. You will possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills creative and factual. You have knowledge and experience gained through technical training and work experience across different media, involving audio-visual and other non-text-based materials, with proven ability to work fluently with software for video, audio and print editing. You will have experience in a similar role in support of communications strategies in the NGO or private sector, with demonstrable potential and knowledge of working with regionally relevant digital platforms and tools and developing content for use across multiple digital channels and measuring reach and impact of online media and communications content. You are comfortable in use and maintenance of social networks within an organizational context, particularly for campaigning purposes, and in helping others to do the same. You have experience of negotiating workload and competing demands and ability to communicate effectively within a large and culturally diverse organization. You will also be confident in your ability to deal with multiple tasks and flexible in accepting ad hoc duties. Besides, you will be fluent in English and comfortable in communicating to staff of all levels from different departments in our offices around the world.

The Amnesty International International Secretariat, which operates from several sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the AI movement globally, fostering AI’s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world.

SCOPE OF WORK

Strategy

  • Work with the Deputy Director Campaigns and Regional Media Manager to develop and implement a regional communications strategy, inclusive of a social media and digital engagement growth plan for the maximisation of reach and sustained, growing, engagement with online audiences.

Programme content and communications management

  • Maintain relationship with the Creative Hub facilitating quality assurance and collaboration between the office and the creative hub for enhanced multimedia content development and quality
  • Develop and maintain portfolio of programme communications tools
  • Support with compilation of and ensuring brand alignment of external stakeholder engagement communications assets

Social media channels

  • Develop vibrant and engaging social media content in various formats in support of campaigns, media and related programme communications needs
  • Responsible for day to day posts of social media and digital content in support of the regional office’s campaigns, monitoring of interaction, reach, responses, and audience diversity.
  • Maintain up to date, creative and dynamic social media and digital communications channels and working with the Media Manager to ensure our digital and social media channels are mutually reinforcing with our media/press output and offline engagements by campaigners and researchers.

Campaigns support

  • Support Regional Campaigners and the Media Manager to deliver social media and digital content of a consistently high standard and accuracy – across the organisation’s key digital channels
  • Support Campaigners’ movement engagements strategies through creative design and presentation of campaigns digests and related multimedia campaigns assets
  • Enhance overall campaigns public engagement and mobilisation efforts by initiating creative rights-holder engagement ideas and new ways to tell stories, eg blogs
  • Maintain calendar of key campaign moments across all campaigns and initiate innovative ideas for campaign and communications engagement of supporters and followers at such moments

Strategic communications

  • Manage story compilation, copy edit, lay out and design, and dissemination of quarterly regional newsletter

Growth and engagement

  • Support public engagement and fundraising objectives of the Regional Office by producing multimedia content in support of such efforts.

Impact Monitoring and Reporting

  • Work with the Regional Media Manager to collate and present regular social media and digital channels performance reporting as a contribution to the Regional Office’s impact reporting and development of insights for impact improvement and growth of online engagement.
