Bird Tracks is a social enterprise that creates digital tools that help track the developmental progress of young children.  The company makes it easier for preschool programmes of all types to collect quality data on children so that preschool teachers can intervene more quickly and effectively.  We accomplish this by developing world class games and assessment tasks for young children that run on tablet computers.

Job Title: Agile Development & HR Lead
Job Location: Cape Town

Bird Tracks seeks to appoint an Agile Development & HR Lead to work in our office in Woodstock, Cape Town.  The advertised position would begin in February with a 12-month initial commitment.  Candidates with varying levels of professional experience are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

Agile

  • Forecast the number of deliverables that can be completed using expertise in estimation and planning.
  • Facilitate daily scrum, sprint planning, sprint demo, and retrospective meetings.
  • Guide the team on how to get the most out of its self-organisation.
  • Inculcate a good vibe and constructive problem-solving by instituting strong communication practices built on openness, honesty, and respect.
  • Improve transparency and information sharing.
  • Remove impediments and distractions.
  • Help make the office a fun, inspiring place to work.
  • Participate in and take advantage of local Agile resources like SUGSA.

Human Resources

  • Stay well-networked in the fields of animation, game design, and education to create a pipeline for local talent.
  • Post job ads, recruit, review resumes, interview, perform reference checks, and otherwise vet prospective hires.
  • Design and implement efficient performance management systems and company policies.
  • Drive the professional development and up-skilling of staff, including scouting relevant conferences, coursework, and other events.
  • Lead performance reviews and assist with promotion decisions.

Other Potential

  • Support the CEO with client communications, such as participating in meetings with senior government or foundation officials.
  • Oversee the development of communication and marketing materials, such as a website, videos, and presentations.
  • Supervise the company’s outsourced accounting and payroll services, assisting with invoicing, loading payments, and reviewing employee expense reports.

Requirements:

  • BA in Psychology (industrial, organizational, clinical) or related field.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodology and frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, XP, etc.; understanding of basic fundamentals of iterative and incremental development.
  • Familiarity with young children (aged 4 to 6 years-old).
  • Strong people and communication skills.
  • Strong logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project management and general organizational skills – including the ability to manage multiple and overlapping deadlines, and to work fairly autonomously on one’s own.
  • Confident speaking with senior executives and government officials.
  • Willingness and ability to gain a working knowledge of concepts in the fields of early education, game design, and education technology.
  • Well-liked by colleagues and able to contribute to a fun, inspiring work environment.
