The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is a nonprofit organisation set up to fight cancer and offer support to cancer sufferers. CANSA’s purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa. Its mission is to be the preferred nonprofit organisation that enable research, educates the public and provide support to all people affected by cancer.

Job Title: Cancer Information Service Officer
Job Location: Cape Town
Salary: Negotiable within CANSA’s grading scales

The purpose of the position is to provide cancer-related information to all South Africans by phone, email, WhatsApp, via the CANSA website and CANSA Facebook pages, as well as walk-in visitors to the CANSA Science and Resource Centre in Cape Town.


  • Provide emotional support to cancer patients and caregivers by phone, WhatsApp and CANSA Facebook pages plus walk-in visitors
  • Frequently follow up on certain enquiries, depending on the nature of the enquiry
  • Log all enquiries received and report monthly statistics and trends
  • Stay up to date with national and international developments in print and online resources regarding cancer and health
  • Stay informed on CANSA and all CANSA national developments, campaigns and events to answer general queries thereon with referral to assist
  • Refer specific and policy related enquiries to CANSA Senior Management
  • Refer specialised clinical enquiries to CANSA’s health and clinical specialist
  • Refer advocacy enquiries to CANSA’s advocacy team
  • Administer Info Service expenses, petty cash, posting and deliveries
  • Assist with the organisation’s social media channels
  • Assist with administrative tasks and Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Assist with maintenance of resource materials


  • A qualification in health, communication or information science with a demonstrated interest in health information and three years related experience would be an advantage
  • English and at least one other official language
  • Have a drivers’ license and own transport
  • Be a non-smoker
