CAPRISA was created in 2001 and formally established in 2002 under the NIH-funded Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA) by five partner institutions; University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Cape Town, University of Western Cape, National Institute for Communicable Diseases, and Columbia University in New York. Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:
CAPRISA seeks to appoint a Laboratory Technician to be based at the Head office in Durban.
Education and experience Requirement:
Laboratory Technician – Microbiology or Clinical Pathology certified;
Current registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA);
At least 2 years previous laboratory experience in Microbiology or Clinical Pathology Laboratory;
Experience working with and handling infectious samples.
Previous clinical trial experience will be advantageous.
Essential functions:
Testing and analysis of samples;
Monitor test and daily procedures as per quality control protocols;
Compile relevant reports;
Instrument and equipment maintenance;
Receiving, sorting, storing, retrieval and shipping of samples;
Method/test validation;
Preparation of specimen kits;
Biohazardous waste management.
Personal qualities and competencies:
Attention to detail, with strong analytical ability;
Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities; Ability to work independently, without direct supervision and fit in well within a multi-disciplinary team;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Period: 2 year fixed-term contract
