Chemonics International seeks a Biodiversity Specialist,
Organizational Development/ Capacity Building Manager, and Program Coordinator for the USAID-funded Resilient Waters Program. This five-year program aims to build more resilient and water secure Southern African communities and ecosystems through improved management of transboundary natural resources and increased access to safe drinking water and sanitation services. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. The positions will be based in Pretoria, South Africa. Fluency in English is required for all listed positions.

Job Title: Biodiversity Specialist
Job Location:  Pretoria

The biodiversity specialist will oversee activities to promote biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience, and improved natural resources management in key biodiversity areas of the program’s footprint. He or she will use knowledge of proven climate change adaptation strategies to promote climate-resilient policies and planning at the regional, national, and local levels. He or she will help key institutions improve critical habitat management, mitigate and monitor threats to biodiversity, and apply more resilient practices to biodiversity conservation approaches. Building on established relationships, he or she will work with Resilient Waters’ partners, target municipalities, and local authorities to ensure biodiversity considerations are entrenched in their systems and policies. Illustrative tasks and activities include developing and conducting and/or developing biodiversity monitoring, strategic environmental assessments and climate change adaptation strategies,supporting the development and implementation of wildlife monitoring systems,identifying opportunities for data-sharing and enhanced integrated monitoring,facilitating private sector integration into river basin management approaches,developing and strengthening management plans for key protected areas and buffer areas,collaborating with communities to identify and facilitate implementation of co-management approaches,working with key stakeholders to apply information-based land-use decision-making.

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in conservation biology, biodiversity, natural resources management, environmental sciences, ecology, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of direct work experience in integrated natural resources management, systematic biodiversity planning and conservation, transboundary river basin management, and/or climate change adaptation
  • Have expertise in supporting and implementing biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring and data reporting to improve conservation planning and strategies
  • Have experience collaborating with government agencies, host-county governments and counterparts, NGOs, international donor agencies, and other stakeholders in southern Africa
  • Have strong connections with SADC, OKACOM, or other key Resilient Waters counterparts
  • Excellent communication, management, planning and coordination skills, including coordinating complex programs and working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and in a collaborative environment as well as show initiative and self-motivation to lead and develop tasks to achieve results
  • Ability to travel occasionally on a short-term basis
  • Excellent English reading, writing and verbal skills

Job Title: Organizational Development/Capacity Building Manager
Job Location:  Pretoria

The organizational development/capacity building manager will work with the Resilient Waters Program’s institutional partners to develop capacity in transboundary governance, planning, operations and management, especially as related to transboundary natural resources management, WASH, biodiversity and climate change adaptation. He or she will work with SADC, river basin organizations (RBOs), and transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs), government as well as community organizations, municipalities, utilities and other project partners, to develop and apply capacity needs assessments, create capacity building plans, and define organizational development impact pathways and strategies. He or she will be responsible for providing strategic guidance, oversight and management of RWP’s project staff embedded in RBOs, TFCAs, and other beneficiaries at national and local levels. He or she will facilitate development of tools for application within beneficiary institutions with a view to enhance capacity and design necessary trainings to improve operations and management within key partner organizations.

Requirements:

  • Degree in business administration, public administration, applied behavioral science or a related field such as human resource management, industrial and organizational psychology, or economic and political development , Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of direct work experience applying performance assessment methodologies to identify and address performance gaps, developing and implementing capacity building plans, building consensus among organizations for improved performance, and developing training interventions for stakeholders in southern Africa
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and excellent ability to manage teams, with experience in successfully supervising remote staff strongly preferred. Strong working knowledge of USAID’s HICD model and SWOT, TNA and GAP analysis and tools
  • Established working relationships with various key stakeholder organizations. Excellent communication, management, planning and coordination skills, including coordinating complex programs and working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and in a collaborative environment as well as show initiative and self-motivation to lead and develop tasks to achieve results
  • Ability to travel occasionally on a short-term basis

Job Title: Program Coordinator
Job Location:  Pretoria

The program coordinator will collaborate closely with the technical component leads to coordinate activities and initiatives aligned with program’s work plan and key objective areas while ensuring effective integration of multi-disciplinary approaches. He or she will work closely with operations, Grants? procurement and finance teams to properly develop specific plans of action and timelines to ensure scheduled program technical activities are implemented successfully and according to schedule. The program coordinator will collaborate with the technical team to plan and prepare concept notes and estimated budgets for program activities and assist with drafting scopes of work and identification of short-term consultants as needed. The program coordinator will contribute to the planning and implementation of the monitoring and reporting activities. He or she will ensure program activities and technical developments and achievements are shared with the communications specialist, and will provide input into work plan development and quarterly, annual and other progress reports.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years of project management experience working on complex development programs
  • Degree in public administration, management, or a related field
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, management, planning and coordination skills, including coordination of complex programs and working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and in a collaborative environment as well as show initiative and self-motivation to lead and develop tasks to achieve results
  • Ability to travel occasionally on a short-term basis
  • Excellent English reading, writing and verbal skills
