Child Welfare Durban and District is a nonprofit organisation that provides a wide range of services to children, their families and communities in the Durban and Umlazi areas. The Organisation’s core concern is to protect children who are at risk. This includes neglected, abused, abandoned and orphaned children, a large majority of whom are either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Job Title: Occupational Health and Safety Officer
Job Location: Durban
Salary: R96 000 to R120 000 per annum, cost to company. The package is dependent upon qualification and experience

The purpose of the position is to establish a safe workplace according to legal standards and foster a culture of attention to health and safety. Facilitate compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines. Provide advice on measures to minimize hazards or unhealthy situations. Be on a constant lookout for violations.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of OHS policies and programmes
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics
  • Conduct risk assessment and enforcing preventative measures

Requirements:

  • Three years’ experience as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act, legislation and procedures
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Diligent with great attention to detail
  • Communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics
  • BSc / BA in safety management or relevant field is preferred
  • Diploma / Certificate in occupational health and safety management
  • Driver’s license
  • Be a responsible individual who swears by OSH regulations and OHS Act
  • Be conscientious and farsighted as work will be largely focused on prevention
  • Be detail-oriented and ready to act in emergencies and after hours
