Communications Jobs in South Africa

The Children’s Radio Foundation is looking for a committed and experienced communications professional with exceptionally strong writing skills to drive communications and public advocacy strategies that further our goals and showcase our work.

Job Title: Communications Manager
Job Location: Cape Town

The organization
We put high school-age youth in the driving seat of radio stations in six countries across Africa, who broadcast their stories and experiences. Our youth reporters take on issues that affect young people in their community: access to education and health services, gender and power, LGBTI issues and human rights, employment and opportunity, climate change and the environment. Speaking in local languages and in a youth-friendly style, they interview community members, host debates, and bring out local perspectives in their weekly youth-targeted radio programs. Our work uses youth involvement in radio to create opportunities for dialogue, skill building, and advancing human rights, training and mentoring a new generation of broadcasters and thought leaders across Africa.

These short films give you a sense of what we do and what is important to us:

The team
We are a small and committed team that believes in creating real opportunities for young people to reflect, grow, and advance themselves and their communities. A person who tackles problems with creative solutions, and who loves the energy of a collaborative, team-oriented creative process will thrive here. We work in a lively, innovative, fast-paced environment and are looking for ambitious, curious, talented, down-to-earth and kind people to join our team.

As our organization expands, we’re in need of a communication professional who can vision and implement communications plans, produce compelling multimedia stories, and lead media-driven campaigns, while interacting with the public and managing relationships with media outlets and advocacy organizations.

The job

A strong interest in youth issues, news, human rights and social justice is a must, along with excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal communications skills. In this role, you will lead our efforts to define the tone of our visibility and communication of impact.

Activities include communications strategy building, content generation and coordination (news articles, films, audio, press releases, annual reports, case studies), social media engagement and website management, creating systems to facilitate youth and partner content creation and distribution, communication skills capacity building, media relationships and partnership development, public relations and representing the organization at public events, and communication campaign development.

A successful candidate is intimately aware of the communications, digital media, and advocacy landscape and has deep knowledge and interest in media platforms, distribution mechanisms, and communications practices across Africa and globally. You do not need a radio background per se, but you must have demonstrated success in conceptualizing and producing innovative, thoughtful content, on deadline. You are responsive, and communicate clearly and effectively whether in one-on-one conversations with team members, presenting to a room full of youth or adults, or writing emails and proposals.

  • A proven track record of success (5-10 years) in journalism, the communications sector, advocacy, or related fields, including considerable experience in digital media, feature writing, and editing
  • Brilliant writing, with a strong sense of detail
  • Solid strategic thinking, planning and implementing skills
