CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organisation that provides support for children suffering from cancer and life-threatening blood disorders as well as their families.

Job Title: Regional Manager
Job Location: Saxonwold, Johannesburg
Salary: R336 000 to R360 000 per annum basic salary. CHOC offers contributions towards a pension fund and medical aid only
Start Date: 1 October 2018
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

The purpose of the position is to lead and manage the region, including to raise funds, raise awareness of childhood cancer, and promote CHOC and its programmes. The region includes the CHOC houses in Saxonwold and Diepkloof; and services at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, the Donald Gordon Medical Centre and private practice oncology units within the region.  The region covers the Gauteng South (GS) area as well as the North West Province.


  • Develop the region by identifying growth opportunities, gaps, and lead initiatives to address inadequacies or develop improvements
  • The RM needs to be seen as a leader by staff, clients (such as the doctors and parents), and by partners, and is generally seen as a leader in the childhood cancer field
  • Look after and develops existing donor and other strategic relationships, as well as identify and develop new strategic partnerships and relationships
  • Manage and develop key and strategic relationships (Department of Health, hospital management, the doctors and the SACCSG, CANSA, etc)
  • Together with the Regional Committee chair develop the Regional Committee
  • Bring needs, challenges, and strategic regional matters to the CEO and also provide him with necessary and relevant feedback

Fundraising, Campaigns and donor relationships

  • Seek and create new relationship with funders, corporates, individuals and the like
  • Maintain and improve existing business development relationships – be they corporate, high net-worth individuals, or other
  • Use networks, platforms, forums and so on, to build the CHOC brand, and our network and relationships
  • Cultivate and deepen relationships and partnerships with donors / supporters
  • Identify regional fundraising opportunities, events and campaigns and ensure their implementation.
  • Promote and market CHOC through various channels and activities (including through the media, communication channels and material, and promotional events)
  • Oversee management of data on CRM (donor and data management

Networking and volunteer mobilisation

  • Manage and develop strategic relationships, including the Department of Health, hospital management, hospital staff and organisations working in the field of childhood cancer
  • Facilitate the development of committees, such as parent committees, survivor groups, and the regional committee
  • With the regional Programme Coordinator, to oversee the volunteer programme, including recruitment and training of volunteers

Staff management and development

  • Staff (including Interns and contract staff) are well guided clear of what is expected of them and how their jobs fit into the region’s / CHOC’s strategy
  • Ensure that staff and volunteers are effectively managed and competent in all their duties providing necessary guidance or training (including the effective management of performance and disciplinary matters)
  • Suitable staff are recruited, necessary positions are filled, and staff structure is consistent and in line with the CHOC’s staffing structure
  • Staff training and mentoring needs are determined and acted upon

Programme management and reporting

  • Manage CHOC’s Core programmes to the required standards. These are accommodation, the transport fund, volunteer support, and practical support
  • Implement and manage CHOC’s parent, child and family support programme through the establishment of support groups, the provision of psychosocial, bereavement and practical support
  • Assist national leaders with the regional implementation of national programmes, such as the Awareness training programme and psychosocial support
  • Manage and oversee other programmes as determined by CHOC’s strategic plan and Executive

Financial, office and general management

  • Develop realistic and achievable annual regional budget
  • Manage the finances and oversee the administration of the region
  • Ensure that all CHOC policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to
  • Ensure submission of accurate and timeous reports financial, programmatic and operational
  • Undertake other post related duties as requested by the CEO
  • Undertake all responsibilities and tasks embracing CHOC’s values, ethos and behaviours


  • A related degree or tertiary qualification
  • Minimum five years’ experience in general management, preferably in the NGO or health sector
  • Experience and proven ability to fundraise, and / or experience in marketing
  • Computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office, and preferably in database systems (CRM), donor portals and social media platforms
  • Verbal and written communication skills in English is essential
  • Fluency in one other South African official language (i.e. in addition to English) is preferred
  • Strong management and organisational skills
  • Good with figures and a basic understanding of accounting, financial management and reporting
  • A natural leader
  • A team player who also works well independently
  • Clear and strong alignment with CHOC’s mission and  values
  • Motivated individual with a willingness to take initiative and responsibility
  • A valid unendorsed South African driver’s licence is essential
