The Citizen Justice Network (CJN) is an award-winning media innovation that trains community paralegals to be radio journalists, the community paralegals are established, trusted activists and fighters for social change in their communities. We empower them with journalism skills necessary to help their communities and assist with access to justice. CJN is about helping rural community members produce their own radio stories.

Job Title: Editorial Assistant
Job Location: Johannesburg

Responsibilities:

  • Produce regular social media including blogs, tweets, Facebook posts
  • Develop and implement various networking, paralegal and radio stations capacity development programs
  • Conduct research to help make decisions about event possibilities
  • Pitch and research stories for content schedule
  • Write articles, create and curate digital content, including social media posts
  • Coordinate on-site arrangements for all meetings and events
  • Assist with negotiations for space contracts and book event space
  • Arrange food and beverages
  • Order supplies and audio-visual equipment
  • Ensure appropriate logistical arrangements
  • Keep track of invoice submissions and reporting of content submissions
  • Administrative Support: maintain and update databases, contact management system and mailing lists
  • Manage CJN website and all other social media platforms
  • Complete special projects as assigned by the Director or Project Coordinator

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • Fluency in African languages
  • Interest in social justice and community media
  • Understanding of how to create efficient editorial processes, particularly in radio
  • Ability to create and maintain filing and administration systems
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Willing to understand the NGO sector
  • Interest in paralegal advice offices and/or community radio
  • Valid drivers’ license necessary
  • Ability to carry out journalistic research and find resources to help make decisions about event possibilities
  • Ability to develop and implement various networking capacity development programs for paralegal and radio stations
  • Ability to work as a member of a small, hard-working, team which is passionate about human rights.
  • Social Media and website management experience
  • Multimedia skills (radio, video, film)
  • Willing to assist with a variety of projects including organizing events and seminars
