City Of Cape Town: Internship Programme 2014

The City of Cape Town is offering a full-time 12-month internship for 30 new graduates in specific study fields. The internship provides an exciting opportunity for graduates to develop capacity and skills in key operational areas in the City of Cape Town and gain practical hands-on experience. The interns will be mentored by managers within relevant departments. Skills development will be enhanced by attending compulsory capacity-building and training workshops, and appropriate training interventions could also be attended when and if necessary.

A suitably qualified intern will work in one of the following sections/branches:

  • Environmental and heritage management ♠ coastal zone management ♠ nature conservation ♠ environmental education ♠ energy and climate change (Environmental Resource Management Department – 15 intern posts).
  • Architecture, urban design ♠ landscape architecture ♠ spatial planning and quality public spaces programme (Spatial Planning and Urban Design Department – 3 intern posts).
  • Land use management planning (Planning and Building Development Management Department – 5 intern posts).
  • Entrepreneurship & employment support ♠ local area economic development (urban agriculture, policy and strategy development) ♠ economic information & research (including information and knowledge management)  ♠ sector trade & investment (Economic Development Department – 7 intern posts).

An applicant should:

  • Be a new graduate in one of the fields of environmental science/studies ● geographical science ● heritage resource management ● nature conservation ● environmental education ● energy management ● architecture/urban design/landscape architecture ● spatial planning ● land use planning ● economics/business science ● information and knowledge management ● development studies ● policy and strategy development ● agriculture/horticulture ● development, agricultural or business economics ● electrical, mechanical, chemical or civil engineering.
  • Have good planning, administration, writing, computer, analytical and oral communication skills.
  • Be able to work in a team and under pressure.
  • Be physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions for posts based at nature reserves.

A valid driving licence is essential for certain posts.

A minimum stipend of R28.55 per hour, based on a 40-hour week, will be paid together with selected employment fringe benefits such as paid annual leave, sick leave and training.

Interviews will take place during early December 2013, and applicants must be able to commence work on 1 February

2014. Preference will be given to local graduates who have not enrolled for further studies coinciding with the internship period.
