Common Good was founded by Common Ground Church in 2005 as an independent and registered nonprofit. Although Common Good is a separate legal entity, with its own programmes, support functions and board, the link between us is still strong and it is the intention to remain as such.

Common Ground comprises ten congregations that meet in different locations across Cape Town. It is currently in year three of a five-year vision, which aims to ‘Fill the City’ with the message life and fame of Jesus by multiplying Christ followers, congregations, compassion and justice, cultural renewal and strengthened churches. Common Good is an integral part of that vision – and a key partner in the third gift (Compassion and Justice) – as we work to serve the marginalised, while also inspiring, mobilising and equipping Common Grounders to live and act justly.

Given the strong link and the alignment in vision between Common Ground Church and Common Good, it is essential that the next CEO of Common Good is a Christ follower, with a strong preference that he or she is or will become a member of Common Ground Church.

 

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer
Job Location: Cape Town
Duration: Candidates must be willing to take on the role for a minimum period of 4 years, starting at the end of 2019, or early in 2020.

The purpose of this position is to lead Common Good in Vision and Strategy; people and culture; Growth of Partnerships and Funding; as well as Organizational Development.

Responsibilities:

  • Vision and Strategy:
  • Together with the Board, carry out the vision and mission of the organization by casting a clear and compelling vision for Common Good’s role and voice as an agent for social justice in Cape Town;
  • Develop both long term (3 years) and yearly strategic plans for the organisation, refreshing and updating our strategy against new insights, with a focus on scaling the mission;
  • Ensure excellent programme delivery by following best development principles, implementing PMEL systems, defining the Theory of Change for each programme, and building cohesion across the broader organization;
  • Take overall responsibility for implementing strategy by monitoring, evaluating and reporting progress to the Board and other key stakeholders, and getting Board approval for each year’s annual plan.

 

  • People and Culture:
  • Manage, develop, align and empower the Common Good Leadership team (CGLT), ensuring that they have the resources necessary to excel together as a team and in their roles as functional leads;
  • Model Christ-centred, spiritual leadership of the organization;
  • Inspire staff with bold vision and clear measurable progress against strategic priorities;
  • Represent, nurture and protect organisational culture and values, ensuring yearly checks on culture are being done and recommendations for improvement are being made;
  • Together with the CGLT, be responsible for the development and wellness of Common Good Staff.

 

  • Growth of Partnerships and Funding:
  • Increase Common Good’s funding income by giving leadership to resource development (fundraising) strategy and being an ambassador for Common Good;
  • Personally hold Board, Common Ground and other key partner relationships;
  • Hold key donor relationships for all programmes;
  • Ensure good overall partner relationships with church communities, networks and programme partners;
  • Support programme leaders in key donor and other relationships.

 

  • Organizational Development:
  • Oversee organisational support functions (e.g. IT, HR, Ops, Comms, PMEL, finance) with the help of the COO in order to deliver the growth ambitions;
  • Give appropriate attention to and executive oversight of the finances, applying strong budget management and business acumen;
  • Ensure excellent stewardship of finances and keep the finance committee up to date on key financials;
  • Ensure governance administration and effective board communication;
  • Ensure good performance management systems are in place;
  • Evaluate and manage financial, operational and reputational risks, having a risk management system in place to ensure that the organisation meets all legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Experieince:

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification (Post graduate qualifications preferred).
  • Mimumum 4 years leading a team of senior managers
  • Experience in leading organisational change
  • NGO work experience/exposure
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies
  • Worked cross culturally in South Africa
  • Managed stakeholder relationships
  • Management budget and financial processes
  • Has experience in (some of) Common Good’s strategic areas: Early Life, Education, Employment (Preferred)

Skills and Additional Competencies: 

  • Track record of innovation
  • Publicly represented an organisation or cause
  • Passion for Social Justice demonstrated through background/experience
  • Business model experience
  • Reasonable amount of Marketing/Resource Development (Fundraising) experience.
