‘Taking Adaptation to the Ground’ is a four-year Community Adaptation Small Grants Facility (SGF) pilot project, funded by the Adaptation Fund, designed specifically to pilot enhanced direct access to climate change finance for communities. The project empowers communities to own, design and drive local level adaptation to climate change, ensuring the integration of science and local knowledge.

The project’s objectives are to:

  • Provide small grants to vulnerable communities for projects that deliver tangible and sustainable adaptation benefits
  • Empower local institutions to identify and implement climate change adaptation actions
  • Compile and share lessons for up-scaling and replicating community-based climate change adaptation.

Conservation South Africa (CSA) is facilitating small grant-making, implementation, capacity building, and monitoring with the Small Grant Recipients in the Namakwa District, Northern Cape.

Furthermore, CSA works with local government, communities, and other partners in the Namakwa District to plan, design, implement and monitor ecosystem-based adaptation projects at various scales.

Job Title: Project Manager
Job Location: Northern Cape

CSA is looking for a highly self-motivated individual to take up a 10 month contract as a Climate Change Adaptation Project Manager, to be based either in Cape Town or in CSA’s Springbok field office in the Northern Cape, to implement the SGF project and other related projects. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain field experience in climate change adaptation and community development through the coordination and support of a minimum of 6 climate change adaptation projects in the Namakwa District and contribute to adaptation projects of local and international importance.

This is a 1 year contract position with the possibility of an additional 2-year extension.

Start date: 1 February 2019 (but to be available preferably last week of January).

The successful applicant’s role will be the following:

  • Support a diverse set of local institutions in the Namakwa District to develop and implement climate change adaptation projects through the Small Grants Facility
  • Administer the SGF programme in the Namakwa region. This includes providing local support (technical and operational) to small grant recipients, communications, knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation, budgeting, site visits, liaising with government and other partners, and overall reporting
  • Work closely with the Executing Entity and SANBI the National Implementing Entity in terms of reporting, evaluations and learning including the implementation of environmental and social safeguards for small grant recipients
  • Organise capacity building and lessons sharing/learning events and facilitate training at these events
  • Support the CSA climate adaptation and communications team to share lessons on the project into the broader community, locally, nationally and internationally

Essential minimum requirements for successful application: (if you do not fit these basic criteria, please do not apply)

  • Verbal and written communication skills in English and Afrikaans
  • A good understanding of the basic concepts of climate change adaptation
  • A Masters’ degree in the natural sciences, relevant social sciences or equivalent tertiary qualification and years of experience
  • Project management experience of at least 3-5 years
  • Excellent ability to work well with budgets and forecasting and some basic financial reporting skills
  • Competency with the MS Office package including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Valid Drivers’ Licence and willingness to undertake regular travel, especially if based in Cape Town

Advantageous:

  • Workshop facilitation experience and practical experience in climate change adaptation projects
  • Project management experience working with logframes or similar planning tools.
  • Practical hands-on project management of community driven projects

Salary: To be negotiated based on experience with the successful candidate
