Job Title: Stewardship Manager and Community Development Officer
Location: Matatiele, Eastern Cape
Employment type: 12-month contract

The purpose of this position will be to work closely with the Stewardship Manager and Community Development Officer in the delivery of CSA’s Rangeland portfolio, namely: using Conservation Agreements to enhance rangeland restoration and environmental stewardship in the uMzimvubu Catchment. This position provides for dedicated capacity to plan, negotiate and implement Conservation Agreements with communal farmers, and to capture lessons on efficacy with regards to both social and environmental benefits of this approach.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationship of trust with conservation agreement stewards
  • Design, negotiate and implement conservation agreements with stewards in the upper and middle catchment
  • Support stewards to design and implement a plan of work to ensure sustainability of their governance structures
  • Support stewards to implement sustainable farming activities through regular meetings, training, and reporting
  • Represent CSA at relevant meetings pertaining to stewardship and restoration
  • Monitor compliance to conservation agreements using a range of techniques, and adaptively manage challenges relating to non-compliance
  • Host a lesson learned workshop with stewards annually

Requirements:

  • Written and verbal fluency in English and isiXhosa essential, Sotho in additional preferable
  • Valid driver’s license and minimum one-year driving experience
  • Understanding of Conservation Agreements
  • Experience demonstrating rural community engagement
  • Culturally sensitive and experience working within a Rights Based Approach
  • Report writing skills
  • Good presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using MS Excel and MS Word
  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse working environment
  • Understanding of communal farming systems in the Eastern Cape
  • Preferred:
  • Knowledge of small and large stock
  • Knowledge and experience of Department of Environmental Affairs Natural Resources Management
  • Knowledge and experience of the uMzimvubu Catchment Partnership Programme
  • Proven ability to work effectively across cultures, establish and manage effective collaborations
