Based in Cape Town, the Programme Manager, Health will develop and manage grant investments, and provide strategic leadership for the dynamic health portfolio in Southern Africa. The Program Manager, Health will report to the Executive Director for Southern Africa with strategic oversight from the Director, Health in New York. They will work closely with ELMA’s program, finance, legal and measurement and evaluation teams across ELMA’s offices. The ability to be an active and collaborative member of a dynamic global team is essential to success in this role.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develop grants across Southern Africa that fit with ELMA strategic priorities in building the workforce supporting children, maternal and newborn health, early childhood development,ensuring children and adolescents are AIDS-Free, and ELMA’s broader approach to philanthropy
  • Lead and regularly assess performance of a large portfolio of health grants across Southern Africa
  • Develop and manage strategic partnerships with funders, implementers, government partners, and other key stakeholders in health in Southern Africa
  • Present new investments, portfolio updates, and other matters relating to the health portfolio in Southern Africa to the Board of Directors of The ELMA Philanthropies Services (Africa) (Pty) Ltd
  • Lead and mentor the health team in Southern Africa to perform at high capacity
  • Conduct thorough due diligence including critical analysis of proposals, budgets, work-plans, measurement and evaluation frameworks, organizational capacity, and external risk factors
  • Support grantees to design high-impact programs and develop robust theories of change
  • Develop, write, and present concise, critical and analytical investment recommendations
  • Critically monitor programmatic effectiveness and financial management of grantees, analyzing grantee reports and facilitating timely grant payments and other grant actions
  • Support cross-portfolio learning and strategy development across ELMA offices
  • Encourage the success of grantees, including connecting to resources and opportunities
  • Other duties, as assigned

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in public health or a relevant field
  • A passion for improving the health of children and families in Africa
  • Strong technical background with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in managing health programs, grant making, or equivalent private sector experience
  • Good understanding of key organizations, leaders and best practice in health in Southern Africa
  • Ability to take initiative and work in a fast-moving, team orientated environment
  • Excellent relationship-building skills to work collaboratively with internal teams well as with external stakeholders and partners
  • Experience developing and managing partnerships and complex programs
  • Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to write effectively in English for a variety of audiences
  • Excellent Excel skills and ability to analyze and present data in a highly organized manner
  • Ability to source, synthesize, and effectively present information and data
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours and travel in region approximately 25% of the time
  • A valid passport, South African citizenship or legal authorization to reside and work in South Africa
