Job Title: Clinical Research Pharmacist
Job Location: Durban
Report to: The Senior Pharmacist
Duration: This is a one-year fixed term contract, which is renewable, based continued funding.
The Clinical Research Pharmacist performs a variety of professional level functions in the development and implementation of research/investigational protocols involving approved and unapproved drugs with regulatory and hospital guidelines, bearing in mind the goals and objectives of research studies. S/he works closely with researchers and research support staff to ensure all pertinent data relating to study and pharmacy’s role in study is communicated in an accurate and timely fashion.
Responsibilities:
- Reviews protocols for clinical investigational drug trials, as required
- Conduct pharmacy-related activities in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP)
- Comply with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements
- Implement and maintain study specific procedures according to protocol requirements
- Train staff on pharmacy related aspects of protocol and pharmacy study specific SOP’s
- Monitors pharmacy activities to ensure adherence to study protocols and dispensing procedures.
- Prepare for any monitoring and auditing visits from regulatory authorities or sponsors
- Interpret prescriptions and dispense medication according to protocols
- Advise participants on the correct use of medication
- Calculate and monitor adherence to medication and provide adherence counselling
- Maintain drug accountability records for all medication
- Conduct stock control to ensure the correct availability of stock levels and monitor expiry of medication
- Prepare medication for destruction in accordance with SOP’s
- Administer, process and file relevant documentation
- Completes reports including incident reports, adverse drug reaction reports
- Compile weekly drug accountability reports and study specific reports as and when required
- Attend and contribute to interdisciplinary team meetings
- Complete pharmacy CRF’s as required, and file accordingly
- Ensure all reporting requirements are adhered to;
- Perform any other duty within skillset and capability as and when required
Requirements:
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy
- Unendorsed South African driver’s license and willingness to travel between sites
- Microsoft Office proficiency essential
- Current registration with professional body – South African Pharmacy Council
- In possession of GCP (Good Clinical Practice) certification is preferred but not essential
- Internship and community service to have already been completed when applying
- Experience in Clinical Trials / Research x two years highly recommended, but not essential
- Planning and administration skills
- Ability to draft and distribute professional correspondence
- Organisation skills including file organisation are essential
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Strict attention to detail will be critical to success
- Ability to maintain confidential information is required
- Ability to work in a demanding, challenging and high-pressured environment with a positive attitude, is required
- Working independently as well as in a team environment, with a willingness to serve as much as to direct, will be expected
