Grassroot Soccer (GRS) is a rapidly growing adolescent health organisation that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilise at-risk youth in developing countries to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier, more productive lives, and be agents for change in their communities. Since 2002, GRS has reached over 2 million young people in 50 countries with life-saving HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health information and services. Grassroot Soccer is looking to significantly scale its impact via partnerships over the next five years, and reach over 1 million young people annually.

Grassroot Soccer South Africa (GRS SA) was founded as a local affiliate of GRS Inc. in 2006. It is registered as an NPO with a local Board of Directors. GRS SA has an annual budget of R30 million and has operated in all 9 provinces in South Africa and is currently implementing programmes in 3 provinces (Gauteng, Western Cape, Mpumalanga).

 

 

Job Title: CHAMP: Provincial Coordinator (Mpumalanga)
Location:  Mpumalanga Province
Compensation: Commensurate based on experience
Reports To: Senior Programme Manager (Modified Direct Programmes)

ROLE OVERVIEW

Within the relevant programme scope, GRS SA is delivering structured HIV and gender-based violence prevention and adolescent health interventions through a series of training sessions and structured community engagements. The Provincial Coordinator will be responsible for end-to-end coordination and support of District Coordinators implementing the CHAMP Programme in the Mpumalanga Province, that focuses on Orphans and Vulnerable Children/Youth, with a strong focus on linkages to services and support. This specifically includes recruiting of children from the community and delivering GRS SKILLZ curricula aimed at in-school and out of school youth living in identified informal settlements, nurturing them to explore and pursue their potential, to create widespread change within their environment and ensuring linkages to further care and support are done effectively at all times.

The Provincial Coordinator will support the three district teams responsible for implementation of GRS SKILLZ primary prevention education and training across districts (and sub-districts) within the province. S/he will work closely with the GRS Senior Programme Manager, mother2mothers CHAMP management team (prime/lead funding partner) as well as sub-partners in the province as part of the CHAMP consortium and provincial stakeholders to ensure the project has champions at the provincial and regional level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing, supporting, coordinating and guiding all district level and implementation teams, on a daily basis, with all overall provincial programme related activities.
  • Conducting work planning activities, develop plans into programmatic and operational objectives and coordinate team efforts with an eye on the broader programme outcomes and consortium activities (bigger picture) at all times.
  • Support all districts in the planning and recruitment phases of OVC/AGYW participants from the relevant communities.
  • Ensure seamless induction/orientation and training of all district coaches and coordinators, when necessary.
  • Meet district programme targets.
  • Source and maintain a strong stakeholder network at community, district and regional level and continuously securing linkages with district teams to improve participation and linkages to services.
  • Regularly work with relevant GRS internal departments to document success stories, lessons learnt, project experiences, achievements and processes.
  • Support and lead on M&E activities, approve monitoring data and reports from District Coordinators on a weekly basis and report to the Prime Partner and Senior Programme Manager on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. In collaboration with M&E teams.
  • In consultation with functional business units, provide oversight of Programme implementation, HR, Finance, Operations & M&E for the programme.
  • Work closely with all departments to develop systems that enhance site support and ensure adherence to internal protocols,standards and policies.
  • Oversee and manage all the provincial procurement processes and activities.
  • Ensure compliance to internal control systems, procedures and mechanisms for programme implementation.
  • Implement monitoring strategies and ensure the application of procedures for capturing and publishing disseminated data for monthly, quarterly, and/or annual project reports.
  • Ensure administrative functions at district level are being carried out timeously and in compliance with requirements. This includes (but is not limited to) financial reporting, monitoring and evaluation, monthly and quarterly reports, attendance related activities, performance reviews etc
  • Ensure the implementation of Site Quality Assessments of all sites and introduce strategies for improvements in conjunction with all relevant departments.
  • Ensure that all relevant project information and documents are recorded, maintained, collected and stored centrally complying with operational requirements and IT protocols.
  • Planning, coordinating all team related staff events in collaboration with other relevant departments.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Programme Manager ensure team development, disciplinary and performance management other team related HR activities are supported accordingly.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Relevant University Degree/Post-Graduate qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of community development programme coordination or management experience.
  • OVC/AGYW programmes experience and PEPFAR/USAID procedural knowledge
  • Minimum 5 years project implementation experience required.
  • Strong and proven financial management experience and skills
  • Data management and M&E experience required with proven track record
  • Valid South African driver’s license is a compulsory requirement
  • Willingness and ability to travel across the province for regular support, monitoring and stakeholder engagement visits
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suites
  • High-level communications skills both written and verbal. Added advantage ability to converse in the local languages spoken in the Mpumalanga area
  • Have extensive and demonstrable knowledge of the communities in which interventions will take place, in Ehlanzeni, Nkangala & Gert Sibanda Districts
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Comfortable navigating selected communities independently
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and high programme targets
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with managing budgets effectively
  • Ability to consult, take initiative, multi-task & coordinate multiple priorities

  • Supportive approach is required at all times when working with the CHAMP implementation team

  • Comfortable working independently and reporting on activities to supervisor as well as broader consortium stakeholders on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis
