Applications are invited for the Head of Department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Therapeutic Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Department of Occupational Therapy is responsible for the training of Occupational Therapists at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition, the Department has a strong legacy of research excellence and makes a considerable contribution to the scientific training of postgraduates in the School of Therapeutic Sciences.

The University wishes to appoint a motivated individual, who will be able to move the Department into a new era of relevance, effectiveness with a dedicated focus on Teaching and Research.

Brief Description

Responsibilities:

The Head of Department will be responsible for providing academic vision and leadership required to enable the Department to establish and maintain a position of excellence within the School of Therapeutic Sciences, the University and in the profession. This will involve the management of all academic activities inclusive of teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, student-related and administrative matters within the School, including human resources, financial management and general administration. The Head of Department will be responsible for the development and promotion of academic excellence within the School in order to maintain its position of excellence and diversity.

Qualifications and experience:

A PhD in an appropriate discipline, about 5 years’ post-PhD experience in managing occupational therapy in an academic environment and university administration at a senior level are essential requirements. Excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills are prerequisites. The incumbent should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the Faculty and University. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head for a fixed term of 5 years, renewable for 5 years depending on performance. Should the appointee be from outside the University, the appointee will be transferred to a continuous academic post at an appropriate level within the appropriate discipline, at the end of the successful term of office.
