In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ in South Africa and the region, the Research Programmes, of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Impact Centre is an inter-disciplinary team of professionals (researchers and practitioners) primarily grounded in the social, behavioural and economic sciences, working at the research-policy-action nexus, focused on stakeholder-engaged science, and supporting open science/ data and citizen science initiatives. The Policy Action Network (PAN) is a project in the Impact Centre, supported by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). PAN assists government policy advisors, researchers, programme managers and civil society groups develop and implement transformative public policies by strengthening evidence use capabilities and relationships, supported by digital tools.

Job Summary:

Through ongoing engagements by HSRC researchers with health system policy actors, a need has been identified to provide more in-depth support to state entities in relation to accessing and using health systems evidence as part of policy decision-making. To address this need, PAN seeks to appoint up to two (2) freelancers to provide specialist support for:

•Scoping specific health system policy issues to be addressed, in consultation with government and civil society stakeholders.
•Sourcing additional research and related evidence relevant to the identified policy issues to add to existing health systems evidence bases.
•Appraising, summarising and synthesising research and related evidence to help policy actors understand the relationship between possible interventions and outcomes in the identified policy issues.
•Facilitating engagement by policy actors and the wider public with available evidence to develop a shared understanding of evidence implications for policy actions.
•Supporting PAN with updates to existing health system evidence bases.

Requirements:

(1)Extensive experience in public health research and practice.
(2)Relevant Masters or PhD qualification.
