In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The eResearch Knowledge Centre (eRKC) within the HSRC employs a group of practitioners and specialists in the areas of information services, geospatial analytics and digital curation who provide knowledge services to enhance the HSRC’s research capability.

 

 

 

 

 

Job Title: Cataloguer
Location: Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

Job Summary:
The eRKC is looking to appoint suitably qualified professionals to fill four Cataloguer positions. The HSRC committed to assist the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State to create a legal library. The main responsibilities of these positions are to catalogue (including indexing) a selection of legal records in a digital repository.

Cataloguer:
Internal and External Advert
3 Months’ Contract (11 January to 31 March 2022)
Office Base: Pretoria Office / Remote working from home as per the HSRC’s Directive with visits to the Commission’s office in Parktown, Johannesburg when necessary

The following are the key responsibilities for the Cataloguer positions:
•Create bibliographic records of documents, transcripts and video recordings using an augmented Dublin Core metadata schema.
•Do quality control of existing records.
•Contribute to the development of metadata guidelines and procedures.

Requirements:
•B.Bibl degree or an equivalent LIS qualification
•At least 5 years’ cataloguing experience using digital library management / digital repository systems
•Knowledge of any integrated Library Management System or working knowledge of a digital repository
•Experience within the legal environment will be an advantage
•In-depth knowledge of cataloguing and metadata description standards and tools
•Excellent proficiency in writing in English
•Good planning and organising skills
•Ability to work independently and be productive without extensive training and supervision
•Good time management
•Good interpersonal skills and a strong service orientation which will contribute to cooperative and effective interaction with colleagues
•Willingness to work under pressure, according to plan, to meet deadlines
