ICLEI–Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network of over 1 750 cities and other subnational governments committed to building a sustainable future. ICLEI provides technical services, capacity building, networking opportunities and cutting-edge urban solutions to its member cities and their communities. ICLEI’s African Head Office, which serves ICLEI’s member cities from across Africa, is based in Cape Town (www.africa.iclei.org).

ICLEI Africa seeks to appoint a Professional Officer, who is fluent in English, as well as Arabic and/or French, to assist our team with member and partner liaison, and to strengthen our growing network of subnational governments. The incumbent must be a native Arabic or French speaker, who can speak and write fluently in one of these languages and preferably have a working knowledge of the other language.  He/she should also have an interest in African current affairs, geopolitics and development issues.

Job Title: Arabic and/or French-speaking Professional Officer – Member & Partner Liaison

Job Location: Cape Town

The job will include the following and the successful candidate must have proven experience and skills in these areas:

  • Translation and language interpretation
  • Diplomacy and engagement, particularly with high ranking government officials and other stakeholders in the global development sector
  • Partnership and client liaison
  • Public interface
  • Ability or affinity for group facilitation and community engagement

The following would be advantageous:

  • Experience in working with/in different levels and structures of government
  • A demonstrated understanding of/experience in the environmental field
  • Experience in working in Africa, preferably North and/or West Africa, and at global level
  • Marketing and promotion experience

Requirements

  • Relevant degree, preferably post-graduate, or equivalent qualification in the fields of Development Studies, Language and Communication, Geopolitical Studies, or similar
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience related to the above listed areas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the language/s listed above
  • Professional demeanour
  • Highly computer literate
  • Innovative individual with a ‘can do’ attitude who can think on his/her feet and harness well-established networks to further build ICLEI’s good reputation and networks across Africa and internationally
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multiple and multi-disciplinary teams in a highly dynamic and creative environment, often engaging directly with high level political leadership, academic and technical experts, the United Nations and other international organisations and the private sector on behalf of ICLEI
  • Ability to be flexible about work responsibilities, prioritise and thrive under pressure
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, well-organised, attention to detail and quality, and a structured and proactive working style
  • Valid code B driving license, with at least one year’s driving experience
  • South African resident/valid work or critical skills permit
  • Must have a passion for, and willingness to, travel extensively, both locally and internationally
