Job Title: Counsellor / Social Worker 
Job Location: Observatory, Cape Town.

Responsibilities:

Service Provision:

  • Complete assessments of new arrivals for assistance and document all client interactions
  • Assist clients to determine what assistance would be most beneficial to the client
  • This is based on vulnerability and sustainability
  • Ensure that all documentation required to process the request is present
  • Casework, case management and community development services to people with substance use disorders and addictions
  • Where necessary, refer clients to DSD, or other psychosocial and healthcare providers, and provide appropriate documentation and reports
  • Provide group and individual counselling
  • Provide educational, supportive and informative groups
  • Conduct family sessions, and complete appropriate paperwork including recommendations
  • Supervise interns, students, and volunteers
  • Participate in case review discussions with other Service Provision staff for particularly difficult cases as scheduled
  • Attend and actively participate in program and staff meetings when scheduled
  • Assist in the development of an annual work plan and ensure that interventions are on time, within budget and achieving targeted results
  • Provide social work advice to management team on changes to existing programmes and developing innovative programmes for subsequent years to come

Administrative duties:

  • Provide written and verbal reports as required for the completion of documentation pertaining to clients and the organisation
  • Answer emails and phone enquires, as directed, by Clinical Director
  • Provide feedback to appropriate individuals and report back thoroughly at staff meetings on all external and internal meetings and sessions
  • Regular weekly, either telephonically or in person, feedback sessions with Supervisor
  • Schedule and adequately document external and internal referral appointments, if necessary, for clients
  • Chair and scribe for meetings, as assigned
  • Contribute to the annual review and revision process of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Data capture information related to service delivery
  • Advocacy efforts
  • Lead panel discussions, workshops, training, etc. concerning the education, development and improvement of addiction prevention and treatment
  • Be conversant and know networking partners for external referrals. This includes regular attendance to Social Workers Forums, Local Drug Action Forums, and similar organisations to ensure a strong network of referral
  • Where services are not being provided to substance users, act as an advocate for inclusion in service delivery
  • Meet with community stakeholders: Clinic, SAPS, DSD, Schools and others to develop a strong referral network in the Northern Cape
  • Governance and reporting
  • Liaise and maintain networking relationships with relevant statutory, private, independent and implementing partner’s organisations
  • Attendance to relevant in-house, community and donor meetings; disseminating relevant information to Inner Peace staff and volunteers as scheduled
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the organisations governance framework, quality of and service improvements agenda. This includes contributing to the development of work plans annual plans, strategic plan and organisational assessments
  • Contribute to reviews of the organisation’s policies and procedures relating to services to clients
  • Narrative report writing, contribute to funding proposals, etc., as assigned and requested
  • Contribute to needs assessments and service development
  • Record keeping
  • Capture all relevant statistics, including those for support groups facilitated, and submit statistics on or before due date to appropriate individuals
  • All employees at Inner Peace are legally responsible for all records held, created or used as part of their business within the organisation, whether paper-based or electronic (including emails) for client, corporate and administrative records
  • Be conversant with the Inner Peace policy and procedure on records management and to seek advice if in doubt

Requirements:

  • Degree in Social Work or related field
  • Degree in Addiction Care
  • Registered with South African Council for Social Service Professions or other Professional Regulatory Body
  • Minimum of three to eight years’ experience as a practicing Counsellor/Social Worker within the Addiction Treatment environment
  • Knowledge and experience rendering statutory services for people with addictions
  • Fluency in written and spoken: English and Afrikaans
  • Written and oral communications skills
  • Supervision and management experience and skills
  • Experience working with people with addictions
  • Management and leadership capacity, organisational skills
  • Experience conducting training for social workers and other groups
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Suite, include Excel
  • Valid code 08 driver’s licence Friendly personality
  • Enjoys working with people
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and has great attention to detail
  • Ability to complete complex assignments and tasks, as assigned, meeting prescribed deadlines Ability to work constructively in a stressful environment and plenty of resilience
