Main purpose of the role:

  • To provide strategic and administrative legal support to our investment client’s property business.

Responsibilities:

  • Review various agreements relating to our client’s properties business
  • Keeping our client up to date with changes in statutory and common law as far as it relates to properties and its business
  • Manage the legal risk and ensure that the necessary legal support is offered to the business
  • Accountable for overseeing and monitoring the legal aspects of the properties business in order to protect our client’s interest and support the company’s business strategy
  • Assist in the negotiation of complex property transactions and offer legal advice on the structuring of transactions across the business, including but not limited to acquisitions of Properties, Sale of Properties, Lease Agreements, Co-Ownership Agreements, Shareholders Agreement, Development Agreements etc. Ensure proper implementation of transactions are in accordance with the Alternative Investments investment committee approvals
  • Provide strategic guidance on all Legal and Compliance matters
  • Interact with other legal functions within our client and the investment business to efficiently manage processes and transactions
  • Managing matters outsourced to other legal firms
  • Managing our client’s properties litigation portfolio (Landlord/Tenant matters as well as specific matters)
  • Interact with Investments: Risk and Compliance to ensure that investments are managed per mandate and within the regulatory framework
  • Report to the relevant risk committees
  • Any further legal assistance as determined by the CEO, CFO and the Head of Properties
  • Attend relevant committee meetings

Minimum requirements:

  • LLB degree
  • 3 years relevant experience in a Legal role at a comparable Property and/or Financial Services
  • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court
  • Admission as a Conveyancer will be advantageous
  • A tertiary business/commercial qualification will be advantageous
  • Strong commercial law experience including drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts

Technical requirements:

  • Advanced drafting skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the South African legal, financial, litigation and taxation system
  • Reasonable financial and economic literacy
