SAEON, Elwandle Node, requires the services of a dynamic, self-motivated Intern.

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF).

SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making; and contribute to capacity building.

This position is supported by the DST’s Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure (SMCRI) programme.

Marine Field Technician Internship (2 Year contract)

SAEON, Elwandle Node, based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, requires the services of a dynamic, self-motivated Intern to provide technical and logistical support for the various research and long-term monitoring activities in the field, the laboratory and at its premises.

Key responsibilities will include:

Provide assistance with field activities (coastal and estuarine) with specific reference to the preparation and handling of equipment (such as sampling gear and scientific instruments).

Pre- and post-field trip servicing of vehicles, vessels, equipment and storage of gear.

Provide assistance with the collection and recording of scientific measurements that includes physical data and biological information.

Provide assistance with record keeping, data capturing and data processing.

Provide assistance with the sorting of biological material and the preparation of specimens for laboratory analysis.

Requirements:

  • Completed BTech or BSc Honours degree in Marine Science or equivalent.
  • Experience in deploying scientific instruments such as CTDs, ADCPs, SBRUVs and ROVs.
  • Sea-going experience on small boats.
  • Sound written and spoken English communication skills.
  • A valid code B driver’s license.
  • Independent and willingness to travel to remote locations.

Physical requirements:

The appointed person would be required to: bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods as well as be able to lift and move heavy objects.

The appointed person should be comfortable in the water (swimming and snorkelling)

Shortlisted candidates may be subjected to a practical assessment where their technical skills and aptitude will be tested as part of the selection process.
