Developing the transport network technology strategy and providing technical support for the transport networks across all MTN OPCOs. Provide technical guidance and strategy on the evolution and convergence of transport networks to an all IP network. Manage the network infrastructure and related facilities implementation standards and strategy. Manage the Performance monitoring and business modelling of networks.

KPA duties

Key Tasks:
•Communication.

•Contribute to the definition of the transmission network strategy and architecture clearly describing the future vision for transmission and identifying key decision points to enable this vision to be achieved
•Ensure the transmission strategy and architecture aligns with business objectives and the strategic plans of other departments
•Participate in the translation of the transmission strategy and architecture into long term plans
•Understand the capabilities and limitations of new technologies, applying best practices when designing the transmission network
•Support the design, Planning and Optimisation of transport networks access and backbone(WDM, SDH, IP/MPLS)
•Provide guidance on the deployment strategy for broadband – Services provided, Target areas, Spectrum and licence strategy
•Group Vendor evaluation and selection for transport Networks focusing on Total Cost of Ownership, Technology assessment and vendor performance
•Identify key evolution/trends in transport technologies and provide roadmap input to Group vendors
•Performance management of IP/MPLS (KPI development and monitoring)
•Co-ordinate trials and working group for Transport Networks across the Group to fully utilise skills pool and encourage knowledge sharing and key learning’s across the Group
•Provide Technical support to Group CTIO, Group VPs, and CTOs on all Transport Network related issues.
•Manage the performance of Group vendors and assist in the resolution of major operational problems on the Transport Network
•Negotiate with Transport Network vendors on behalf of the Group
•Management of Transport Network Specialist
•Develop and support Competency Centres in the OPCOs and Regions
•Support global connectivity both internal and external

Key Skills
•High level Management of the Transport Network strategy & planning
•Thorough understanding of the Transport network technologies (TDM, IP, MPLS, ATM)
•Ability to develop technology strategy taking into account key business drivers and focus areas
•Overall understanding of the interdependencies between Transmission & Transport networks and access and core

Supervisory / Leadership / Managerial Tasks: Refers to the responsibilities for directing, guiding, motivating and influencing others.
•Lead and guide strategy development within the Transport Network.
•Guide and support the planning & implementation and performance optimisation of Transport Networks within the operations.
•Lead the development of relevant standardised and key performance Indicators for Transport Networks.
•Facilitate the achievement of operational Key Performance Indicators within the operations.
•Providing overall guidance on capital/operational expenditure for network related spend on the Transport Network e.g. Capex to Revenue, Capex per Mbit, Opex per Mbit

Educational requirements

•BSC degree or National Diploma in electrical engineering light-current / electronics / communication engineering

Experience required

•7 years experience in Transmission and Transport Planning and Optimisation
•Experienced in contract agreements and specifications of equipment and network installations for GSM networks.
•At least 5 years experience in technology management

Skills required

Knowledge:
•Telecommunication / Transmission/cellular Industry knowledge.
•Good liaison and negotiation skills and knowledge.
•Good knowledge cost and budget management
