Job Title: Project Manager of Advocacy and Research Project
Job Location: South Africa
Salary: R50 000 per month

The purpose of the Project Manager is to assist with a South African civic technology project, lead and oversee the implementation of the High Court Digitisation project. Fundamentally, the role is a research and advocacy position. Engage user audiences from the legal field, and liaise with High Courts on their records policies. The technical aspects of the project will be led by the OpenUp development team.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct technical research and inquiry relevant to the digitisation process and in alignment with its objectives
  • Oversee the identification of physical documents to be digitised and made available to the scanning staff
  • Oversee the scanning and conversion of physical documents into digital copies
  • Oversee that comprehensive information concerning digitised documents, such as case details, document details, dates and other metadata are linked to the digital copies
  • Ensure that the digital copies and their metadata are made available to users through a website (or other mechanisms or partners), based on the needs of the users
  • Engage in, coordinate and maintain healthy and productive stakeholder relations and partners across the project
  • Ensure compliance to legislative requirements
  • Prepare donor reports and other external program reports as needed
  • Provide regular progress reports
  • Structure a sustainable, efficiently operating process around the digitisation of court documents
  • Conduct research and inquiry into the financial sustainability of the project
  • Travel as necessary for the fulfilment of the job

Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years’ direct project management experience
  • Academic qualifications in the social sciences, legal studies and/or development studies
  • Minimum of three years’ research and advocacy experience
  • Some experience in the nonprofit, non-governmental and/or development sectors
  • Written and spoken communication skills and the ability to speak more than one official South African language
  • A demonstrated interest in open justice
  • Computer literacy
  • Communication, reporting and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative setting
  • Integrity, honesty and responsibility
  • Strong networking skills
  • Demonstrable and passionate commitment to citizen empowerment, open data and open government
  • Working knowledge of user-centred design processes
  • Working knowledge of court records processes
  • Practical experience in data science, information science or software development
  • Practical experience with engaging the legal fraternity
