Operation Smile is a global nonprofit organisation that provides free life changing surgery to children and adults suffering with facial deformities, more specifically cleft lips and/or cleft palates.

Operation Smile South Africa seeks to appoint a Coordinator for Chapters and Student Programmes to be based in Cape Town.

The Coordinator: Chapters and Student Programs is responsible for student and school programs, chapter (volunteer clubs), individual donors and student and school fundraisers, supporting activities by ensuring that individuals have the appropriate guidance and support as well as providing press coverage for appropriate fundraisers and the development and provision of appropriate marketing material, manuals and support for OSSA initiated activities.

Job Location: Cape Town
Salary: R17 500 per month

Responsibilities:

  • Chapter (volunteer clubs), their fundraisers and events
  • Individual Fundraisers and events
  • Volunteer, student, school & chapter database maintenance
  • Gathering stories for press release and highlighting on social media
  • Student Clubs (University and Schools) and growing of student programs in SA and the region
  • Responsible for activities pertaining to Operation Smile South Africa

Individual donors, fundraisers chapters and student programmes

  • Responsible for regular communication with Individual donors, provision of thank-you letters
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of a database of volunteers including chapter members and student club volunteers
  • Responsible for Chapters (volunteer clubs) and will need to recruit more volunteers as well as starting up of clubs throughout South Africa. This will include support for Chapter events as well as assisting with training workshops for non-medical volunteers and student teams
  • Responsible for the Student Clubs and individual students throughout South Africa and will support them in registering their clubs with OSI and maintaining close communication with them to ensure the growth and sustainability of each club
  • Responsible for supporting all individual and small group fundraisers and ensuring excellent client service for them
  • Ensure ‘roadshow’ to recruit and liaise with potential new chapter members, volunteers, individual donors, school clubs and student clubs
  • Presentation at Universities, Associations, Schools, Committees, Rotary and Lion’s clubs and similar
  • Work with local Chapters and Student Programs to help create more awareness about Operation Smile and clefts as well as assisting with events and the starting up of new Chapters
  • Communicate with Programs team for any mission needs pertaining to smile kits, patient gowns and other items
  • Help plan and execute missions within South Africa by making sure that relevant Chapters and Students are involved and thanked for assistance
  • Support Development Coordinator with corporate partnerships and employee engagement as is needed

Individual, Chapter and Student Club Fundraising Support

  • Support chapters and student clubs with their events under OSSA guidelines
  • Responsible for promoting the debit orders from individual donors through press/marketing and events
  • Support fundraisers where appropriate (typically extreme fundraisers, large gala events etc.) with press coverage and ensure that they have appropriate promotional material
  • Assist with coordinating at least one OSSA fundraising event a year in conjunction with the Country Manager and Development Coordinator
  • Supporting a range of other events throughout the year arranged by OSSA and others
  • Work with interns and local chapters and student clubs to ensure that regular events are hosted throughout the year and that this is done in line with the procedures and protocols for Chapters and Student Clubs

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two to three years’ experience in youth Development work within NGO Sector
  • Computer skills
  • Event based fundraising and project management
  • Experience in marketing and social media abilities a plus
  • Driver’s license
  • Ability to travel
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Ability to work diplomatically in a global team-based environment that includes board members, medical professionals, and volunteers
  • Ability to accept newly assigned projects or duties as they become necessitated
  • Oral, written, and presentation language skills are required in English and Afrikaans, additional language skills would be ideal
  • Be self-motivated, able to plan ahead, and remain flexible, adaptable under pressure and with short deadlines
  • Be detailed oriented, energetic and perseverant
  • Be able to work well independently and in a team
