Orbis International is a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to the improvement of eye health globally since it was founded in 1982. Programmes and projects are implemented in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Orbis International Africa manages two large initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa: Child Eye Health and Strengthening Human Resources for Eye Health. The Orbis International Africa office in Cape Town has been active since 2010 supporting continental, sub-regional, national, regional and district eye health priorities by strengthening service delivery with partners and capacity building in health facilities and communities.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Communications is a member of the Africa Executive Management Team. The role provides guidance, oversight and support to communications across the Africa programme portfolio. S/he recommends the communications strategy in line with global, regional and country strategies. The incumbent is also responsible for oversight of compliance to the strict child protection policy within the Orbis International Africa communications portfolio. S/he ensures that the Africa communications team collaborates effectively with the Global Communications Team towards effective utilisation of global resources and expertise.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Regional Director – Orbis International Africa
Supervises: Communications team members and contracted suppliers
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and Brand Management

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of internal and external marketing and communications strategies
  • Participate in global initiatives
  • Provide communications support to advocacy
  • Evaluate and approve all marketing platforms and associations with the Orbis brand
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of all communications materials in line with the Orbis Brand Manual and related protocols and policies
  • Support reporting to a diversity of Boards and Board sub-Committees across the global organisation

Campaign Implementation

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of all publicity campaigns to secure relevant media exposure for Orbis Africa, its stakeholders and partners
  • Assist the Orbis Africa NPC Affiliate with donor related campaigns such as cause related marketing campaigns and donor recognition strategies
  • Ensure the highest possible return of investments

Fundraising

  • Ensure that global fundraising teams have access to required communications materials
  • Contribute to income targets through supporting income-generating initiatives such as events, cause related marketing campaigns, promotions and individual giving campaigns

Programme communications

  • Develop and integrate innovative communication plans into all programmes to ensure patients, particularly the most marginalised and women and girls, can access eye health services
  • Supply engaging and inspiring content for stakeholder engagement purpose
  • Make use of suitable platforms to maximise exposure of Orbis projects and programmes, e.g. Flying Eye Hospital programmes, World Sight Day events, etc.

Internal Relations:

  • Work closely with the various portfolio heads within Orbis International Africa to provide communications support as needed and required
  • Pro-actively engage with global communications teams within Orbis to ensure information sharing and optimisation of resources

External Relations

  • Oversee the delivery and quality of work from all communications suppliers in their contribution to effective communications initiatives, campaigns and materials
  • Represent Orbis International Africa at all relevant external forums, as appropriate and agreed to by the manager
  • Serve as Orbis International Africa spokesperson as and when appropriate and required
  • Participate in public relations activities and events as requested

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Recommended to have a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field
  • Recommended to have a minimum of 8 years’ communications management experience ideally in the not for profit sector
  • Proven track record in communications campaign design and implementation.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strategic and creative thinker with evidence of ability to multitask and work to deadline
  • Demonstrated understanding, experience and success in all aspects of communications campaign development and implementation
  • Knowledge and understanding of eye health as a public health, development and human rights issues
  • Ability to prioritise and work under pressure
  • Strong organisational and supervisory skills
  • High professional integrity
  • Flexible, pro-active, and open-minded work style
  • Strong computer skills and good working knowledge of MS office applications
  • Excellent oral and written fluency in English; working knowledge of a second language desirable
  • Ability to travel locally and internationally 20% of the time
