Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) is a non-profit company established to facilitate the establishment and development of Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) in southern Africa. PPF in partnership with Conservation International is implementing a Herding for Health (H4H) project in the Massingir District of the Limpopo National Park. The H4H Programme is a beef value chain development project that facilitates wildlife-livestock coexistence and rural development. The project recruit and train professional herders from target communities who then implement planned grazing of livestock and assist with rangeland restoration through herding and kraaling, wildlife-livestock contact mitigation, management of primary animal health and production, as well as market access development.

Job Title: Herding for Health Project Manager (H4H PM)
Job Location: Mozambique

Reporting and Scope

The Herding for Health Project Manager (H4H PM) will report to the Director Herding for Health Southern Africa. It will be a PPF post and the H4H PM will receive strategic guidance and some line management from the PPF Project Manager, Limpopo National Park.  The H4H PM will work with selected villages in the Massingir District that are either inside the Park, the Buffer Zone outside the Park, or near Massingir village. Some spatial expansion to neighbouring districts may have to be supported. The H4H PM will oversee H4H implementation, which involves herding and kraaling interventions with livestock, community engagement, stakeholder management, project, staff and financial management, as well as spatial planning. Training will be provided by the Project where needed.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Mozambique citizenship is an absolute requirement for this position – please do not apply if you are not in possession of this requirement
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in rangeland science, animal science, or conservation management, or similar – A postgraduate qualification will be an advantage
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in project management, including managing and overseeing field operations, data collection and staff
  • Good understanding of the principles and processes of livestock management as well as rangeland management and restoration will be essential
  • Proven ability to work with a variety of stakeholders, such as communal farmers, traditional leaders, government officials, private industry and non-governmental agencies
  • Knowledge of the beef value chain in Mozambique and especially veterinary and food safety regulations will be an advantage
  • Advanced computer skills, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in Portuguese and working capability in English is essential
  • Self-driven with ability to function independently but also manage and work within a team
  • Driver’s License and willingness to travel

Advantageous:

  • GIS skills and proficiency
  • Knowledge of Shangaan

Performance Areas:

  • Oversee and drive the implementation of the H4H project in designated communal rangelands and ensure planned grazing is implemented and best practices are complied with based on the H4H model
  • Manage staff recruitment process, staff training, and provide line management to herders and herder supervisors
  • Plan and execute project implementation according to strict time lines and budgets in consultation with Program leadership
  • Manage operational budget, including vehicle maintenance, equipment and staff needs
  • Maintain good labour relations within the auspices of Mozambican labour laws
  • Foster a close working relationship with relevant community leadership and structures, government departments and officials as well as LNP and PPF management and staff
  • Ensure data collection by herders on rangeland parameters, livestock health and production, and wildlife-livestock interaction is correct and consistent (continuous monitoring and evaluation)
  • Submit regular written and verbal reports to various levels of management and Programme reporting channels
  • Facilitate site visits by donors, Programme leadership, and/or coordinate any other relevant event
  • Actively participate in market system development ventures for beef produced from participating communities
  • Support fundraising for project support or expansion through participation in proposal development
  • Provide any other reasonable support where requested by management

Remuneration: A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated, based on qualifications and experience.
