The Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust is a social profit organisation that promotes an end to violence against women, specifically rape, and assists women to achieve their right to live free of violence by reducing the trauma experienced by rape survivors, encouraging reporting of rape incidents, facilitating the active engagement of communities in challenging high rape rates and advocating for a stronger criminal justice system.
Job Title: Communications Officer
Job Location: Observatory office, Western Cape
Start: The position is available from 1 November 2018.
Salary: R7 500 to R10 000 per month
The purpose of the position is to assist the Communications Coordinator in the implementation of strategic marketing and communications strategies and plans as outlined in the organisations strategy. Work across digital platforms to create content that engages Rape Crisis communities. Facilitate the active engagement of digital and online communities. Assist in the development of materials that inform communities about Rape Crisis services.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and monitor social media platforms
- Write content for social media platforms
- Create a monthly content roadmap to be approved by the Communications Coordinator
- Schedule all social media posts
- Day-to-day monitoring of social media engagement, responding to all queries and comments
- Monthly reporting and feedback on social media performance
- Assist the Communications Coordinator in putting together the monthly newsletter
- Ensure the ongoing maintaining and updating the Rape Crisis website
- Assist in cataloguing and storing all Rape Crisis photographs, press clippings and other media materials
- Write and coordinate content for the website, blog, press releases, newsletter and other materials
- Assist in internal communications of news and events to staff and volunteers via WhatsApp and social media
- Actively engage with programme staff to ensure that content for social media showcases the ongoing work of Rape Crisis programmes
- Assist the Communications Coordinator in liaising with programme staff
- Other ad hoc duties, including stock take, updating lists and database management
Requirements:
- A diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or similar qualification
- Recent graduates, or one to two years’ experience in communications, digital marketing, copywriting, or journalism role
- Writing skills
- Attention to detail
- Passionate about all things online and digital
- Computer skills, including Microsoft (Word, Outlook and Excel)
- Knowledge of how to use and update various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
- Prioritise tasks and meeting deadlines
- Has a positive ‘can do’ attitude
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Creative thinker who contributes new ideas
Advantageous:
- Post Graduate experience is not required, but one to two years of experience in similar function is
- Experience working or volunteering in the NGO / NPO sector advantageous
- Experience with social media and marketing and the online / digital environment related to online communities would be an advantage
- Knowledge of how to work with WordPress or similar platforms
- An interest in or understanding of gender based violence in South Africa would be an advantage
- Ability to speak and write in isiXhosa
