As part of the University’s Internship Programme applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following posts from 1st March 2012 to 28th February 2013.

These internships are aimed at Black people (as defined by the Employment Equity Act).  The University in its Equity Policy (2003) makes a commitment to provide appropriate corrective measures to redress past imbalances.  One of the initiatives used to achieve this aim is Internship Programmes, which provides individuals with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills and to gain critical experience so that they are better placed to compete successfully for higher level posts within the Institution and other organisations.

Requirements:      

A minimum of a Matric certificate with at least two years experience in a cooking capacity in a large business kitchen OR a Catering diploma (one year’s study) with at least one year relevant experience in a cooking capacity in a large business kitchen.    This experience does not have to be formal employment, it can include volunteer work for which you may or may not have been paid.   Please note that candidates who have previous catering experience will be at an advantage.

Other requirements include: –

  • Must be from the Eastern Cape and be prepared to reside in Grahamstown for the duration of your Internship (by from the Eastern Cape we mean, those who were born in the Eastern Cape and wish to return, those who have family members in the Eastern Cape and/or those who currently reside in the Eastern Cape).
  • A pass in Maths/Maths Literacy/Accounting at Grade 12/NQF 4 level
  • English at the Grade 12/NQF4 level
  • Leadership experience

In addition, candidates need to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English because learners must be able to cope with the demands of completing the supervision course which requires that assignments be written and that learners participate in class
  •  Ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Sound interpersonal skills including a sound level of assertiveness
  • Ability to anticipate, solve and prevent complex problems through planning
  • Sound organisational skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Sound service ethic
  • Ability to converse in Afrikaans and Xhosa will be advantageous
