Society for Family Health (SFH) is a South African affiliate of Population Services International (PSI), an international NGO network operational in over 70 countries. SFH in South Africa concentrates on issues of HIV/ AIDS. As part of their HIV/AIDS control efforts, SFH is using social marketing to motivate behaviour change with respect to consistent condom use, HIV testing and other safer behaviours.   

 

 

Job Title: VMMC Provincial Lead
Location: uMgungundlovu and Harry Gwala KZN
Department: Medical Programs- VMMC
Employment status: Fixed Term Contract

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Theatre Operations

  • Conducts aseptic procedure at the operation site
  •  Administers local anaesthesia
  • Performs the surgical cutting of the foreskin using the specific technique     according to WHO standards
  • Uses diathermy or ligation to achieve haemostasis
  • Performs surgical suture on wounds according to surgical standards
  • Ensure proper application of wound dressing after procedure
  • Conducts scheduled and unscheduled reviews of circumcised client
  • Administers post-operative analgesia

2. Client medical screening

  • Performs physical examinations of client
  • Obtains an informed consent
  • Decides if client is eligible for chosen method
  • Identifies urological deformities and refer for specialist attention
  • Conducts screening and treatment of STIs
  • Performs WHO clinical staging on HIV positive clients

3. Safety Coordination

  • Ensuring safety of clients before, during and after the circumcision procedure
  • Ensures a high level of emergency preparedness is in place at workstation
  • Scrutinizes the client identity against all documents
  • Uses diathermy properly observing the principles of diathermy use
  • Ensures that right drug, right route, right dose is given to client
  • Discards contraindicated conditions prior to procedure
  • Manages adverse events
  • Educates all ancillary staff on operational conduct in theatre
  • Conducts baseline vital observations before procedure and after procedure

4. Adverse Events Management

  • Prevent, minimize the occurrence of AEs Managing any adverse events
  • Classifies any adverse event correctly
  • Manages AEs according to their classification
  • Responds to all adverse event calls round the clock in shortest possible time
  • Manages all adverse events following the adverse event treatment guidelines
  • Refers to the next level of management

6. Mobilizing and outreach activities

  • Sensitizes the organizations, the public on the VMMC program and integrated services
  • Plans and implement scheduled VMMC sensitization meetings
  • Conducts outreach activities targeting workplace, schools, churches, vulnerable population places of social gatherings
  • Participates in events with other stakeholders
  • Implements, monitor and evaluate the impact of each activity

Qualifications

  • Degree in MBCHB
  • Registration with HPCSA
  • Experience in VMMC
