The Solidarity Center, an international NGO focused on labor and worker rights issues, is seeking a Project Consultant for the Sub-Saharan Africa Office for the period September 15 – December 15, 2018. The Consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Country Program Director for South Africa, will coordinate with the Senior Program Officer based in Washington, DC and work in close communication with Country Program Directors in Nigeria and Kenya.

Job Title: Programme Consultant
Location:  Johannesburg, South Africa or Harare, Zimbabwe

The Consultant will support union and CSO collaboration in three countries to advance the aims of the Stop the Bleeding Campaign, which include:

  • Reducing dependency on external financing by mobilizing Africa’s domestic resources,
  • Addressing structural causes of illicit financial flows,
  • Supporting CSO and community-based accountability campaigns, and
  • Advancing African policy prescriptions for inclusive economic development, decent work, and social justice.

The Project Consultant will be responsible for working closely with trade union federations and civil society organizations in three countries to develop and implement national strategic plans; coordinate issue campaigns in each country; create detailed activity and program reports; monitor progress and budget; and remain abreast of in-country developments relating to illicit financial flows and developing partnerships between trade unions and civil society organizations.  The successful candidate must have extensive experience in continent-wide community organizing, social movement-building, and expert knowledge of policy development and advocacy.

The Project Consultant will be preferably based in Johannesburg or Harare but must be able and willing to travel frequently within Sub- Saharan Africa.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ability to conduct extensive research to inform strategic planning
  • Organizing experience with an ability to support issue campaign strategy development
  • Significant background in movement–building, community organizing with an emphasis on coalition building, and policy advocacy
  • Excellent project management skills with ten years of experience
  • Must have clear understanding of Civil Society Sector, including trade union and labor organizations in Sub- Saharan Africa
  • Knowledge of policy development and advocacy in natural resource management
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent research, writing and communication skills
  • Must be able to travel
  • Africa regional experience is preferred
