Sound Africa is a not-for-profit podcasting company. Registered in 2016, we aim to develop the podcasting medium in South Africa. We believe in the essential role a free and diverse media sector plays in a healthy democracy. We aim to contribute to this by developing innovative content, new formats and train content creators in the podcasting/radio field. To achieve this, we are looking to hire an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to lead Sound Africa on a day-to-day basis. Sound Africa is a tiny start-up in a new field.

The daily team consists of three people in two cities. They often work with partners and freelancers across the country and internationally. Everybody regularly works well outside their job descriptions. The EIC needs to be excited about a job that entails field-recording all over South Africa and the world, as well as writing grant applications and figuring out how to set-up a PA-system for a listening event.

Their ideal candidate can take Sound Africa to the next level. The position will evolve with the organisation and the right candidate recognises the potential for personal growth along with growing the organisation. The most important skill for the job is the ability to creatively navigate the challenges of a start-up environment.

Job Title: Editor-in-Chief
Location: Cape Town or Johannesburg
Remuneration: 25-35.000 Rand / month depending on qualifications and results.

Requirements

  • Experience:
  • 5-10 years in media, start-up or non-profit sector.
  • Education:
  • Relevant degree in fx Journalism,
  • Communications or Media Studies.
  • Podcast/radio experience:
  • Ideally the EIC has both a practical and theoretical understanding of podcasting.
  • This includes editing experience and a solid understanding of journalistic principles.
  • Fundraising experience:
  • The EIC will be ultimately responsible for raising funds for the organisation.
  • Experience in writing grant proposals and a network in the field is an advantage, however, the podcasting market/media funding is rapidly changing, and experience/ideas about for example microfinancing, memberships or commercial sponsorships will be welcome.
  • Management experience:
  • The EIC is managing a small team as well as relationships with partners and freelancers/volunteers.
  • People skills and some management experience is a great benefit.
